Modest Matveyevich Okulov (1765 – July 13 (July 25 N.S.), 1812) was a Russian Major General of the Imperial Russian Army during the Napoleonic Wars.[1]
Biography
Modest Okulov was born in 1765 into a noble family; the son of the Provincial Master Matvey Gerasimovich Okulov (1734-1819) and Anna Alekseevna, née Princess Kropotkina (1747-1816), brother of Alexei Okulov.
On April 2, 1784, Okulov was assigned to military service as a sergeant in the guard, and on January 1, 1791 he was awarded the rank of captain of the Imperial Russian Army. December 22, 1798 he received the shoulder straps of a colonel.
From April 16, 1800 to October 27, 1802 he was retired.
He entered the Nasheburg Musketeer Regiment, and on January 26, 1803 became its commander.
He was appointed chief of the Rylsky musketeer regiment on July 16, 1803, with promotion to major general.
In 1812, Modest Matveyevich Okulov fought against the French and died on July 13 in the Battle of Ostrovno, becoming the first general of the Russian army to fall in the French invasion of Russia.
From his marriage with Anna Karlovna Berg, niece of General-General M.V. Berg, he left his daughters Anna (born in 1796), Elizabeth (1797) and Sophia (1812).
