Modoka (/ˈmɒdɒˌkə/) also doing business as Modoka Studios Entertainment is a Dutch interactive entertainment studio and publisher located in Zwolle, Netherlands. It was founded on December 19, 2012.
Apart from software development, the company also specializes in language localization for video games and software. Modoka develops and publishes mainly mobile games, but has also released games for Microsoft Windows. Modoka's revenue comes from advertisements and donations in order to keep its business model free.[1] They are best known for their game Saddies: Attack!!
History[edit]
On 19 December 2012, Modoka was founded (as Lumodokate Game Studios) by Moroccan-Dutch indie game and Homebrew game developer Fouad Foumo, creating small Homebrew games for most portable devices like the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. The company started out as a download site for freeware. Modoka was establish as a game development studio in an effort to remake their Homebrew game projects as mobile games. These projects mainly consisted of warez, video game clones or tribute remakes of retro games, which were subsequently shared throughout notible Homebrew sharing sites.[2] With the decline in interest in the Homebrew scene, Modoka shifted towards porting their projects to more popular platforms. This made the company transition into a more traditional online distributor and publishing studio, which resulted in branching away from their Homebrew origin. Alongside the transition, the company introduced a name change, domain change and new company logo.
With this rebranding, Modoka launched additional services in order to assist third party developers by providing additional marketing, translation, and localization in the Benelux market. In 2015 the company signed agreements with various independent game developers to publish their mobile games. One of these collaborations is with Bulgarian game developer Imperia Online Ltd, and Modoka was planned to publish their video game Imperia Online for the MIUI platform. Their first major title Saddies: Attack!! was announced around the same time for Android, Amazon Fire TV, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Vita.[3][4] Saddies: Attack!! released on Microsoft Windows exclusively through GamersGate as a free bonus game for registered users on January 2017. The Android version released six months later on June 4 through the Google Play store.[5][6]
Modoka announced that their second project in 2017 was a new mobile game, named Projectile Guardian. Projectile Guardian was released August 20 on Google Play for Android devices.[7] In October 2017, Modoka and National Breast Cancer Foundation collaborated for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2017 with their "Power Up Against Breast Cancer!" campaign.[8] On August 2019 Modoka alongside Deep Silver and 17 other game publishers entered G2A's Anti-Piracy initiative to combat fraud regarding Product keys that were being sold on the platform. The plans were for third-party independent audits regarding product keys were planned to be conducted by accountants firms like Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers or KPMG. The initiative has since been abandoned.[9] On September 2019, Modoka announced release dates for multiple game projects that are set to release in the subsequent months. This was done to honor their business strategy. The first game that was set to release, was KarolBall for Android devices, released on October 1, 2019 worldwide on the Google Play Store. In 2021 Modoka released their game BDEF: Base Defenders for Windows on Kartridge.[10]
