Sheikh Mohamed abdi Umal born in Garbahaarrey Somalia, also known as Sheikh Maxamed Cabdi Umal, is a Somali Islamic television preacher, religious writer, scholar and a member of Al-Ittihad Al-Islamiya
Early Life[edit]
Sheikh Muhammad Abdi Umal was born and studied Elementary School in somalia, and afterwards he had memorized the Quran in Ethiopia with a grade of excellent. He obtained a degree in Sharia Master's and Islamic fundamentals from Islamic University of Madinah in 1993.
Sheikh Umal Role in peace and stability in Somalia[edit]
Somalia has experienced some of the worst drought in the century – including the 2011 famine which claimed the lives of a quarter of a million people, and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. The 2017 drought displaced over a million persons, driving up the number of IDPs in Somalia to over 2.5 million persons – 20 per cent of the population. The protracted nature of the crisis is still evident today, with deepening vulnerability. Sheikh Umal who often have a large audience during Friday sermons were sensitised on the importance of addressing the drought, peace and war. Islam as a religion became an effective tool for social control and mobilisation in somalia and the relationship between religion, politics and the nation-state is in this paper closely linked to the principles that create political legitimation and the basic character of a state. Somali religious scholars (‘ulamâ’ ) like sheikh umal had supported the Government of Somalia Against Al-shabab. The role of the current Somali religious scholarship simply cannot be ignored, because it is they, the Somali religious leaders, who will be central to swaying the opinions of ordinary Somalis that might still harbor sympathy for the people under the guided belief that the group (Al-Shabaab ) is terror organization. Without Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Umal, it becomes easier for society to break down and join those so-called Al-shabab leaders and those on the fringes to become easy pickings for radicalization.
Sheikh Umal role in covid 19 Pandemic in somalia[edit]
Muslim clerics, including one of the most respected Somali clerics, Sheikh Umal, have been quick to try to debunk the myths, encouraging people to protect themselves and seek medical advice if they feel sick. The ministry of religious affairs continues to engage closely with religious leaders, and belives there is a responsibility on all leaders to assist in raising public awareness and community engagement throughout the country with regard to Covid-19. It has not been exhaustive and we should continue to push the envelope.[1]
Controversies and Criticism of Sheikh Umal[edit]
Sheikh Umal Speech on Covid 19[edit]
Mohamud Abdi Umal broadcast in a YouTube video on February 28, 2020 the following message, translated below in its key points, to his followers throughout the world:
“The world today is in a state of panic, fear, shock, and despair, because today Allah sent a small army of His troops into the world called corona virus. The men who made the missile and made the navy, went to the moon, and reached the medical sciences very advanced levels in the world. [But,] in that world there was an invasion of a virus that the eye didn’t catch. Where is the Chinese power? Where is the power of the USA? Why don’t you get rid of the small virus? If you were arrogant yesterday, feel the pain today, which, you have made in your own hand.” Mohamed Abdi also references religious faith, “Somalis pride themselves, and believe if they read some Quranic verses, they can avoid this disease, which is also told to them by the clerics who prevent community integration.” These clerics, according to Mohamed Abdi, encourage separation through business and schooling in Islamic madrasas. Mohamed Abdi says, “They encourage people not to hear the infidel statements—guidelines, which they say could lead Muslims astray.” These clerics, also according to Mohamed Abdi, encourage people to doubt all the government advisory measures about hand washing and other methods of prevention.
Umal Speech about lice in Prophet Muhammad Hair[edit]
Followers of Sufism believe criminalize defamation of religion in somalia, which in practice means outlawing nearly anything that hurts the sensibilities of a believer. This comes after the speech of Sheikh Umal about lice in Prophet Muhammad hair's but however sheikh umal defends his remarks on the lice by providing following hadith from Sahih Bukhari.[2]
Narrated Ka'b bin Ujrah: The Prophet came to me during the period of Al-Hudaibiya, while I was lighting fire underneath a cooking pot and lice were falling down my head. He said, "Do your lice hurt your?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Shave your head and fast for three days or feed six poor persons or slaughter a sheep as a sacrifice:"
