Mohamed Ateia
Mohamed Ateia Ibrahim (Moha) was born in Alexandria, Egypt. Moha works now as an Environmental Engineer and Group Leader at the Center for Environmental Solutions & Emergency Response (CESER)[1] within the Office of Research and Development of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).[2] His research as Title 42 Researcher[3] at the US EPA targets the removal of micropollutants (mostly PFAS[4]) and the assessment of various separation and destruction technologies from lab-scale to Superfund sites. Inspired by the realization that conventional water treatment techniques will not be able to treat these problems, Moha has devoted himself to developing practical remediation solutions that draw on his expertise in engineering and chemistry.[5] Specifically, he has focused on the assessment of conventional methods (e.g., GAC[6], IX resins[7]), the development of new materials[8] and/or composites to adsorb/degrade micropollutans (e.g., PFAS[9][10][11], DBPs[12], PPCPs[13], illicit drugs[14]), and the mobility of new classes of contaminants in the environment (e.g., microplastics[15][16][17][18]). Moha has a multidisciplinary research background with hands-on experience in environmental engineering, materials chemistry, and agricultural engineering. He has initiated and led over a dozen research collaborations with researchers across the world to target micropollutants in a practical way and published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles covering these topics.[19]
Prior joining the US EPA, Moha was working as a Research Associate with the Dichtel Group[20] at the Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University. He developed a degradation method for PFAS waste in collaboration with Cyclopure Company. In this applied research project, he worked closely with the chemists and engineers of Cyclopure for the development of an efficient and cost-effective treatment train for PFAS removal from contaminated water/wastewater and total destruction in waste streams. In addition, Moha was managing the water treatment group within Northwester Water Center. His research also included the development of new cyclodextrin-based polymers for micropollutants removal. During his postdoctoral training at Clemson university with Tanju Karanfil[21], Moha served as President of Clemson University Postdoc Association, and received the “2019 Clemson University Distinguished Postdoctoral Award”.[22] As a postdoc, he has been actively engaged in both practical projects with local water utilities and scientific projects with collaborators within Clemson University and with other US institutions. His work covered both the fate and the removal/degradation of several classes of emerging water contaminants, including PFAS, disinfection by-products, microplastics, volatile organic compounds, and illicit drugs. Moha has graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. During his master's course, he worked on biological treatment of agricultural drainage water for in-situ reuse using moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) under different salinity conditions.[23] For his PhD course, Moha decided to switch to physicochemical water treatment and explore the potential of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for removal of micropollutants.[24] He completed this work at both Tokyo Tech (adsorption and regeneration work) and University of Copenhagen, Denmark (material's development and characterization).[25] Moha's PhD work received several awards, including “The First Place Prize, Honda Young-Engineers-Scientists (Y-E-S) Forum”, and his thesis was awarded “First Place Prize, Kikkawa-Yamaguchi Ph.D. Dissertation Award”.[26]
