Mohammad A. Muhit (Bengali: মোহাম্মদ এ. মুহিত) is a Bangladeshi physician, public health researcher, and politician. He is a specialist in clinical ophthalmology and international public health, known for his work in disability and childhood blindness prevention in developing countries. He is the founder of Child Sight Foundation (CSF) Global.[1]
Politically, Muhit is affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He serves as the Chief Advisor to the Sirajganj District BNP and was the BNP-nominated candidate for the Sirajganj-6 constituency in the 2018 Bangladeshi general election.
Early life and education
Muhit was born into a prominent Muslim political family in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. He completed his secondary and higher secondary education before enrolling at Dhaka Medical College, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
He pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, obtaining an MSc in Clinical Ophthalmology from the University of Bristol (1999) and an MSc in Community Ophthalmology from University College London (UCL) in 2000. He later earned a PhD in International Public Health from the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in 2010.[2]
Medical and academic career
Research and CSF Global
In 2000, Muhit initiated the "Childhood Blindness Project of Bangladesh," which aimed to identify and treat children suffering from vision loss. This initiative evolved into the Child Sight Foundation (CSF) Global, an international NGO. Under his leadership, the organization has:
- Identified over 22,500 children with disabilities.
- Facilitated cataract surgeries for 9,500 children.
- Trained approximately 25,500 individuals on disability identification.
- Established therapy centers and a wheelchair manufacturing unit in Sirajganj.
Muhit also serves as the President of the Professor M. A. Matin Memorial BNSB Eye Hospital in Sirajganj.
Teaching
Muhit has over two decades of teaching experience. He is a Visiting Lecturer at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH), London, and the University of South Asia in Dhaka. He has supervised PhD students at the University of Sydney and other institutions.
His research works have been published in journals such as the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, and Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology. He has presented his findings in over 43 countries.[3]
Political career
Muhit became involved in politics during his student days at Dhaka Medical College. He served as the International Affairs Secretary of a central student organization and was elected to the Dhaka Medical College Students' Union (DMCSU) in 1989. He was an active participant in the 1990 Mass Uprising in Bangladesh against the autocratic regime.
He is a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He previously served as the Convener of the Shahjadpur Upazila BNP and is currently the Chief Advisor to the Sirajganj District BNP. In the 2018 Bangladeshi general election, he was the BNP nominee for the Sirajganj-6 constituency.
During the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement and subsequent non-cooperation movement, Muhit played an active role in mobilizing support in Sirajganj and Enayetpur, providing medical support to injured activists through his network of hospitals.
Personal life
Muhit is the son of Dr. M. A. Matin, a veteran politician who served as the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Health Minister of Bangladesh. His mother, Tasmina Mahmud, was a specialized physician. His grandfather, Abdullah Al Mahmud, was a member of the British Parliament and later the Minister of Industries in Pakistan.
He is married to Fahmida Muhit, an architect and chartered accountant. They have a daughter, Shamama Muhit. The family resides in both Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
