Mohammad Al-Hawari (born 6 October 1976 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) is a Jordanian UN expert in humanitarian media and communications, official spokesperson, journalist, and novelist. He is known for his work with international organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), where he played a pivotal role in highlighting refugee issues and raising awareness of humanitarian crises in the Middle East and North Africa.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Career

Mohammad Al-Hawari began his professional career in journalism, working for 17 years as a reporter and journalist with global news agencies. His first major assignment was with Reuters, covering conflict zones during the Second Chechen War between 1998 and 1999. Over the following years, he reported on crises in Gaza, Bahrain, and Yemen. He later worked with Agence France-Presse (AFP) until the end of 2013, covering major political and humanitarian developments in the region.[4][5][2]

In mid-2014, Al-Hawari joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan as Head of Media and Communications, Social Media Manager, and Official Spokesperson. During his tenure, he positioned UNHCR at the forefront of global media attention, highlighting the plight of refugees and displaced persons. He received several international and regional awards for his work, including the "Best Use of Social Media for Humanitarian Work" from the Social Media Summit and the "Best Humanitarian Spokesperson" award from the German government. He was also awarded a Medal of Honor by the Jordanian army for representing humanitarian organizations on refugee issues.[4][5][2]

In 2021, Al-Hawari joined the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) as the Regional Spokesperson for the Middle East and North Africa. In this role, he faced major humanitarian challenges, including the Turkey-Syria earthquake, floods in Libya, the Sudan conflict, and the ongoing war in Gaza. Al-Hawari conducted numerous media interventions to provide updates on these crises and advocate for global solidarity and support for affected communities.[4][3][2]

In addition to his humanitarian work, Al-Hawari is a writer and novelist. He published his first literary work titled "Gum," a collection of six stories based on real refugee experiences. The book was presented at international book fairs, reflecting Al-Hawari's commitment to highlighting the human aspects of displacement. He is currently working on his second novel, "The Lamp and the Oil," expected to explore themes of resilience and survival.[1][4][3]

Al-Hawari has leveraged digital media to counter misinformation and enhance public understanding of humanitarian issues. In 2013, he launched a video podcast titled "Sofa," considered the first of its kind in the region. He continues to engage audiences through the "Cassette" podcast, media forums, and blogs, focusing on correcting misleading information and promoting accurate narratives. Currently, he presents a storytelling series called "Everyone Has a Story," sharing accounts from his humanitarian work experience.[4][3][1]

Between 2024 and 2025, Al-Hawari co-founded a specialized training institute in humanitarian work in collaboration with "Qalbi Atman" under the name "Ghaith Training." He developed a curriculum aligned with the values of the Gulf states and international standards, offering courses on the basics and concepts of humanitarian work.[1][4][3]
