Mohawk Games is an American video game developer based in Baltimore, Maryland, known for releasing the strategy video games Offworld Trading Company and Old World.

History

Mohawk Games was founded in 2013 by Soren Johnson and Dorian Newcomb, as veterans from their work at Firaxis on Civilization IV.[3] The studio is based in Hunt Valley, Maryland, home to several video game studios that could trace their lineage back to Microprose from the 1980s,[4] a studio that itself had veterans who formed Firaxis.[5] The studio was backed by Brad Wardell of Stardock, who served as the company's President.[3] Initially, the studio was comprised exclusively of white men, as part of an industry trend in the early 2010s.[6]

The studio's first effort was an economic real-time strategy game called Offworld Trading Company, for the PC.[7] Johnson has said that he prefers developing for the PC because of the lack of gatekeepers.[8] Offworld Trading Company featured music from Grammy-award winning composer Christopher Tin, an old roommate of Soren Johnson who also provided the soundtrack for Civilization IV.[9] Offworld Trading Company entered Steam's Early Access program in 2015,[7] and was eventually released in 2016, earning a 78 on aggregate review website Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[10]

In 2018, Mohawk announced a new strategy game published by Starbreeze called 10 Crowns,[11] a title which they later changed to Old World.[12] Mohawk used Old World as an opportunity to improve on Johnson's work on Civilization III, focusing on AI and diplomacy that would feel more immersive and less like a game.[12] In 2019, their Sweden-based publisher encountered financial issues, and sold the rights to Mohawk's upcoming game back to them.[13][14] By 2020, the studio had announced that it had successfully diversified their team, and removed employees who had been accused of harassment at the company.[6] The company also published a code of conduct.[6] The studio released Old World in 2021, leading PC Gamer to name the game the best strategy game of 2021.[15] Tom Chick, editor of Quarter to Three, named Old World his top game of 2021,[16] it was named best history game of 2021 by History Respawned[17] and won two prizes at NYX Game Awards 2021.[18] The current CEO of Mohawk is Leyla Johnson, who has prioritized greater gender equity at the studio and in the broader game industry.[19]
