Mojo Outdoors
Mojo Outdoors[1] is a maker of motion and spinning-wing decoys offering imitation products for waterfowl, predator, turkey, and dove hunting abroad. Started in 1999, the company has changed the waterfowling industry, in particular, the decoy market. In part due to the development of Mojo Outdoors, migration patterns among waterfowl have shifted, many crediting the repetitive and overwhelming use of spinning-wing style decoys. Prior to the founding of Mojo Outdoors, there was no other successful company selling spinning-wing decoys on the market; today there are several.
History of Company
In 1999, Mojo Outdoors was founded by Terry Denmon[2], an American engineer, businessman, entrepreneur, and TV personality. Growing up in Louisiana, considered to be a hunter's paradise, Terry was exposed to many opportunities outdoors; among these was hunting. His father raised and trained bird dogs, and hunted them often. Terry graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and founded his first engineering company in Monroe, Louisiana. Throughout Terry's adult life, he owned various engineering companies. This provided the means to enjoy himself in the world of hunting.
Terry worked as a guide for big game species in Texas and Colorado. He also operated a very successful waterfowl hunting operation in Louisiana, gaining knowledge about hunting and waterfowl in particular. In 1999, Terry joined his friend Murry Crowe and together developed the Mojo Mallard spinning-wing duck decoy. This decoy in particular revolutionized and changed the way that waterfowl hunters approached their hunt. This was the basis of the company, known today as Mojo Outdoors. Since the launch of their decoy, Terry has gained majority ownership of the company and has expanded the company's line of decoys to feature turkey decoys, dove decoys, crow decoys, predator decoys, and others.
Construction of Original Mojo Mallard Spinning Wing Decoy
The original Mojo Mallard Spinning Wing Decoy followed a national interest among the waterfowl hunting community to design and build a spinning wing decoy. Few companies had tried to do this before Mojo, but all were unsuccessful, and were not durable as a whole.[3] With the help of Terry Denmon and his engineering expertise, Murry Crowe was able to develop a plastic framed decoy that was in the shape of a landing duck, feet down and all. On the back of the decoy towards the tail, there was a compartment where a 6 volt battery was to be inserted and connected to a small motor inside the decoy. The battery was connected by a positive and negative terminal. Where the magic happened in the wings, the two decided to use wings with circular brackets on the end where the wing would connect to the mojo body. The brackets set around a cylindrical shaped bar that was connected to the motor and was secured by a screw that tightened down onto the bar coming from the motor. The wings were shaped with a wide base that sat close to the decoy, and a more narrow end that was ideal for imitating the wing beat of a landing duck. On the belly of the decoy, there is a rectangular style prism that is attached to the decoy. This is inserted in a metal pole that is lodged into the ground to hold the decoy stationary in one spot.
On the new Elite series model, there have been a few changes. The wings are now magnetic and require no screw to secure. The battery is simply dropped into the belly of the decoy and does not have to be manually connected by wires. Instead, a positive and negative connection is made much like a battery would connect inside a remote control. The body has transitioned to a rubber-like build, and appears to be more durable. Both plastic and metal wings are available, however the metal wing appears more durable. The paint design on the decoy and wings has also changed. There is a lessened amount of noise that comes from the decoy now and it is almost completely silent.
The new ergonomic design is the baseline for how the rest of Mojo Outdoors products are constructed.
Product Line
Mojo Outdoors has developed its product line to consist of decoys for various hunting situations. Founded upon waterfowl hunting and the Mojo Mallard, their line of decoys has expanded to include other forms of hunting. The Mojo Mallard is ever changing as it has evolved into a more efficient and easy-to-use decoy. With its success, Mojo now offers various sizes of Mojo Mallards such as the Baby Mojo and the King Mallard. The line of waterfowl decoys are now based on the company's elite series decoy, which runs off of a 6 volt battery that is inserted into the belly of the decoy. It can be charged by simply plugging it into a wall outlet, or can be hardwired directly into a power source for powered use. The newest line of decoys can be operated by a remote control, for situations where the decoy may not need to be turned on. Mojo has several different breeds of waterfowl decoys, such as pintails, wood ducks, and teal.
In addition to their waterfowl line, Mojo offers various styles of decoys for their line of predator decoys, turkey decoys, and dove decoys. Focused primarily on motion, all of Mojo Outdoor's decoys have an emphasis on realism and bringing life-like style to their decoys. A full list of their decoys can be found here.[4]
Notoriety in Media
In a highly competitive market, Terry Denmon has gained much fame and notoriety after the success and launch of his company. Given the opportunity to hunt professionally and leave his full time engineering career behind, Terry became host/co-host of different TV shows. He has hosted award winning "Hunting Across America", "Shooters TV", and is currently the host of Mojo TV. Denmon has also been featured in major national magazines.
Denmon was inducted into the Outdoor Legends Hall of Fame[5] in 2014, an award that approximately 100 others have received. The organization operates off the following mission statement: The "Legends of the Outdoors" has been established to recognize those outdoor sportsmen and sportswomen who, through countless hours of hard work and devotion to the outdoors, in both hunting and fishing, have played an integral part in setting the standards and guidelines for the rest of the outdoor world to follow.
Reviews
Over the years, there have been several different blogs and magazines rate products from Mojo Outdoors. Many of those have featured the products in an article. WILDFOWL[6] magazine released their version of the Top Duck Decoys of 2018,[7] and featured Mojo Outdoors Elite Series in their top ten. Two different products from Mojo Outdoors were featured on Wading Lab[8], making up part of their "The 4 Best Motion Duck Decoys."[9] Catch Them Easy,[10] an online buyers guide, featured a product from Mojo Outdoors on their "Best 5 Duck Decoy Reviews of 2019"[11] buyers guide. It is worth mentioning that on Catch Them Easy's buyers guide, Mojo Outdoors most aggressive competitor, Lucky Duck,[12] was also featured on the same list. The Waterfowl Hunter[13], an online blog and buyers guide, places Mojo Outdoors products as being the "Best Motion Duck Decoys"[14] on the market today.
