Mokumokuren

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mokumokuren (Japanese: モクモクれん), also known as Mokumoku Ren or Mokmok Len, is the mangaka for the manga series, The Summer Hikaru Died.

Biography

The initial idea for The Summer Hikaru Died was first envisioned when Mokumokuren was still in high school, preparing for exams. After graduation, in January 2021, they posted their drawings of Yoshiki Tsujinaka (辻中 佳紀, Hepburn: Tsujinaka Yoshiki) and Hikaru Indo (忌堂 光, Hepburn: Indō Hikaru) on Twitter, which were later recognized by Young Ace Up who requested to publish it as a serialized manga.[1]

Their grandmother's hometown was used as inspiration for Kibogayama, the fictional town where the story takes place.[2]

Career

In 2021, having introduced The Summer Hikaru Died as a boy's love story, Mokumokuren later explained that it was not serialized as one, but instead as a queer "coming-of-age" horror.[3][4] Writing under Young Ace Up, Mokumokuren wanted the story and atmosphere grounded in emotion rather than horror, feeling as though the plot and theme already naturally layered the horror based on misattribution of arousal. The manga's artwork is heavily influenced by onomatopoeia, which Mokumokuren was cautious of not overdoing and maintaining within the emotion of the story's context.[5]

In 2022, on the Next Manga Award, The Summer Hikaru Died placed 11th in the web manga category. It ranked first in Takarajimasha's 2023 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for male readers, and nominated for the 16th Manga Taishō.[6][7][8] As of December 26, 2025, the manga's first volume has 4.5 million copies in circulation.[9]

On May 24, 2024, an anime adaptation was announced. Produced by CyPic, Ryōhei Takeshita would direct, compose, and design the characters. The anime released on July 6, 2025, on Nippon TV. Currently, however, Netflix streams the series while Abema streams it in Japan. A second season has been announced. A novelized version of the manga, written by Mio Nukaga was published in Japanese by Kadokawa Shoten on December 4, 2023 with a second volume released in July 2025.[10][11] In 2024, at New York Comic Con, Yen Press revealed they would publish the novels in English. The first of which was published in April 2025, with the second forthcoming on May 12, 2025.
