Molotow, also known as Molotow Club or Molotow Music Club, is a small live music venue and bar on Reeperbahn, in St. Pauli, Hamburg.
History
The Molotow was founded on the Reeperbahn in the centre of Hamburg's red light district St. Pauli, by local musician Andi Schmidt who played in international touring bands like Alien Boys or The Punkles. The venue first opened its doors in August 1990, and has established a reputation for showcasing new talent and hosting many well-known bands' first Hamburg appearances like The Black Keys.[1], St. Vincent, The Killers [2] or Mumford & Sons [3] Others who have played gigs at Molotow early in their careers include Vampire Weekend [4], Biffy Clyro [5], Imagine Dragons[6] [7], Blondshell [8], Peaches, Yard Act [9], Two Door Cinema Club, Idles, [10], Billy Talent, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem[11], Destroy Boys [12], Dream Wife and The White Stripes [13].
In 2013 the building where the club was located was demolished and the Molotow moved to the other end of the Reeperbahn on the corner of Grosse Freiheit next to the Beatles-Platz.
German Indie band Muff Potter recorded a tribute song about the club entitled “Wir sitzen so vorm Molotow” [14] which means 'We're just hanging in front of the Molotow'.
In 2016 a book about the Molotow by Sebastian Meissner was published by Junius Verlag.[15] [16] [17]
Hellacopters frontman Nicke Andersson said about the club: "Rock 'n' roll is not made to be viewed with binoculars from a great distance, or on large screens. Rock n Roll is made for places like Molotow. Here you can experience what Rock n Roll really means."[18]
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 Frank Turner played an exclusive online stream show to help the Molotow [19] during the crisis.
The Molotow won numerous "Club of the year" [20] and "Best National live music Venue" awards [21]. [22] Intro magazine has the Molotow in their Best Club-Top 5 list regularly [23]. Biggest German music paper Musikexpress named it third best club. The Molotow hosts the most bands every year at the annual Reeperbahn-Festival [16].
