Momentum Energy is an energy retailer based in Victoria, Australia retailing electricity to customers in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Queensland.[1] Momentum provides the retail services for electricity supplied to the Bass Strait Islands on behalf of Hydro Tasmania[2] and also retails natural gas in Victoria.[3]
The company is wholly owned by Hydro Tasmania, the largest renewable energy generator in Australia.[4]
Momentum retails gas and electricity to approximately 266,000 sites across Australia and employs around 250 people in Victoria and Tasmania.
Momentum Energy is also the membership sponsor of the Geelong Football Club.[5]
History
Momentum Energy began retailing electricity in Australia in 2004. In August 2008, Hydro Tasmania (a Tasmanian Government business enterprise) purchased a 51 per cent share in Momentum Energy.[6] They then bought the remaining 49 per cent share to become full owners in September 2009.[7]
In 2009, Momentum started their ongoing sponsorship with the Geelong Cats.
In 2015, the company started retailing natural gas in Victoria.[3]
In 2016 and 2017, in partnership with Landcare, Momentum awarded grants to Victorian projects encouraging young people to learn more about their natural environment.[8] In 2016, Momentum partnered with Sustainability Victoria, providing solar panels to Winters Flat Primary School who received the Sustainability Victoria ResourceSmart School of the Year Award.[9]
In 2017, Momentum Energy took a public stance against the pay-on-time discounting practices that some energy retailers used.[10][11] Momentum advertised a '0% off' discount to demonstrate their anti-discount position.[12]
