The Monaghan Cavan League provides football for senior and underage teams in the Monaghan and Cavan region. The debut season was in 2004, with Clones Town winning the Premier Division. The league also has a 2nd tier, called the MCL 1st Division which consists of 6 teams, most of which are reserve teams from the Premier Division, along with Ballyhaise Celtic and Killamooney. The league runs from October to May, with a break from the middle of December until after the Christmas break.

The Current Champions are Glaslough Villa, who went unbeaten in the 2021-22 Season.

History[edit]

The Monaghan Cavan League was formed in 2004, which means the league has been running for 18 years. The most successfull clubs in this league are Clones Town and Monaghan Town, both having won the league 4 times. No other team has really got to their level, apart from Cavan Town, who won the league twice in a row between 2018 and 2020, and also won it in 2007. The league is currently in the 7-12 in the League Of Ireland Football System, which means that none of the teams can feature in competitions like the FAI Cup. In 2013, a First Division was introduced, with the inaugural winners being Glaslough Villa. The league only has 6 teams now, which I assume Coronavirus has a part in that. In 2019, a former League of Ireland club Monaghan United decided to join the league. In their first season, they won the Sean Woods Cup and the Jimmy Smith Shield Cup, beating Glaslough Villa in both finals. The 2020-21 Season was voided because of the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic.

In 2022, a reported 5M was funded into sports clubs in Monaghan and Cavan, including some facilities upgrades for clubs in this league.[1]

Cavan Monaghan Underage League[edit]

The Cavan Monaghan Underage League (CMUL) was formed in 2000 and were made to give the underage teams in Cavan and Monaghan football for all ages. They also field a team for the League Of Ireland underage leagues. The organization has age groups for boys and girls from the ages U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 groups.
