After growing up in Portugal, Dias received her BA in Applied Mathematics and Economics from the Technical University of Lisbon, her MA in Economics from NOVA University Lisbon, and her PhD in Economics from University College London.[2] After completion of her PhD, she joined the Institute for Fiscal Studies as a Research Economist, where she presently serves as Deputy Research Director.

Dias is affiliated with the IZA Institute of Labor Economics and the Centre for Economic Policy Research. She is a frequent co-author of Richard Blundell and Costas Meghir, both of whom supervised her PhD at University College London.[5]
Research[edit]
Dias' research interests are broadly centered in labor and public economics. She has written extensively on the labor market effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has published several influential reviews of non-experimental methods in applied economics.
COVID-19 Pandemic[edit]
In recent years, Dias has published several well-cited papers on the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the UK. In a paper in Fiscal Studies,[6] Dias reviews descriptive evidence on the employment effects of pandemic lockdowns, showing that job losses are concentrated among young, self-employed, and low-income workers.
In line with this work, Dias provided expert testimony to the Women and Inequalities Committee of the House of Commons on the unequal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across genders.[7]
