Monro (Ross James) is a British music producer, songwriter and artist based in London, best known for working on music for the likes of Jhene Aiko, Masego, Adekunle Gold & V. He creates music across different genres including R&B, Electronic, Pop and Hip Hop.
Career[edit]
Monro's first productions came in 2017, when he produced 'Want It With You' for R&B artist Sinead Harnett in June of that year.[1]. Later in 2017 Monro released his own music via Rinse FM's label set up, dropping his debut EP 'Motion' in September with support from Clash Magazine..[2]. He also remixed Jarreau Vandal and Zak Abel's collaboration 'Make You Love Me' in 2017, which was Premiered on the official Red Bull website[3]
In 2018 Monro released 'Gone Clear' (again on Rinse FM's label[4]) featuring London rapper Flohio and premiered by The Fader[5]. LA based R&B artist Jae Stephens also tapped into Monro's production, releasing 'Headlights' which was premiered by Vice[6].He was also awarded The Producer Writer Fund from UK collection society PRS[7]
2019 saw Monro work extensively on Sinead Harnett's debut album 'Lessons In Love,' contributing 4 productions[8] to the 12 track album. He co-wrote Jhene Aiko's multiplatinum selling 'Triggered (freestyle)'[9] released in May.
In March 2020 Monro continued his contributions to Jhene Aiko’s music with the song 'Lightning & Thunder’[10] taken from her 2020 album ‘Chilombo.’ The song featured John Legend and went on to be nominated for Best R&B performance[11] in the 2021 Grammy Awards. In May 2020 he co-wrote and produced ‘My Little Alien’[12] by Rico Nasty which was featured on the official album soundtrack for the Warner Bros movie SCOOB! Further into the year he made contributions to Tori Kelly’s Solitude EP (‘Value’[13]) and Masego’s EP Studying Abroad (Sides of Me[14]). Masego’s EP went on to become an album with the extended verison ’Studying Abroad: Extended Stay’ - the project was Grammy nominated in 2022 for Best Progressive R&B Album[15]
In 2021 Monro featured on BBC World Service's podcast 'Music Life' alongside frequent collaborators Sinead Harnett, Jae Stephens and fellow producer GRADES[16]. The episode explored work/life balance, how experiences contribute to writing music and why R&B is so important to each of them.
In 2022 Monro produced and co-wrote for artists such as KYLE (I Literally Never Think About You[17]) and Willow Kayne (Final Notice).[18]
2023 saw Monro co-produce Adekunle Gold's single 'Party No Dey Stop' with Kel-P[19] [20] which reached number 1 on the official Nigerian TurnTable chart[21] and number 2 on the Official UK Afrobeats chart.[22]
