Monson Mavunkal is an Indian con artist who cheated people by selling fake antiques.
Early life and Education
Monson Mavunkal was born on January 16, 1969, at Cherthala, Alappuzha. He completed his education at a Polytechnic college. His father, Chacko, was a government servant, and his brother was appointed in government service under the dying in harness scheme following Chacko's demise.
Career
His career started in the 1990s when his wife, a school teacher, was transferred from Rajakumari in Idukki.[1][2] He started to live near the town. He started a Chain Survey School at Rajakumari Panchayathu and also a Second Hand Cars and Electrical Appliances shop. There, he began fraudulent activities by promising people that Second Hand Televisions could be delivered in various ways for the lowest price from other districts, taking their money, and cheating people by selling old TVs as new.[3]
He then went on to sell second-hand cars purchased for ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,00,000 per person. However, buyers didn't receive the cars or televisions, and he also cheated a jewellery shop owner by promising to buy gold and provide money in return. People didn't complain because they lacked proof. After his wife was self-transferred, he later came to Cherthala and, in 2003, moved to Kochi to commit scams.[4]
In 2003, he started a company called Kosmos Group, where he manufactured beauty products.[5]
After arriving in Kochi, he met an antique dealer named Suresh and adopted the guise of an antique dealer. He rented a house and turned it into a museum, displaying fake antiques, including Silver coins for betraying Jesus Christ from Mose and a statue of Vishnu’s Dasavatharam, and the Staff of Moses.[6]
Arrest
He was arrested at his daughter’s engagement ceremony.[7]
Kareena Kapoor's Porsche Boxter Car case
In 2021, following Monson Mavunkal’s arrest, police investigating his assets discovered a Porsche Boxster in his possession, which was surprisingly held at the Cherthala Police Station.[8][9][10] Officials stated that the car lacked proper documentation and was among the 20 vehicles seized from Monson in connection with the Sreevalsam scandal. Investigating the car’s ownership online, police were shocked to find that the 2007 registered Porsche Boxster was registered to none other than Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor. This news gained local and national attention, but Kareena Kapoor did not comment on the matter.
Involving in a Rape case
In 2021, Monson Mavunkal was arrested for his involvement in a rape case filed by a 16-year-old girl.[11][12] It was revealed that her boyfriend and a businessman named Sharath raped her after promising to marry her.[13][14] After she filed a complaint, she went to Monson Mavunkal’s house and met him. He then threatened her, saying that if she complained to the police, nude photos of her would be uploaded on social media, causing her to fear him and withdraw her complaint.
Connection with Anitha Pulleyil
It is believed that Anitha Pulleyil, an Italy-based Malayali woman, was involved in his rape, scamming, and financial fraud cases. It is learned that the crime branch also inquired about her presence at the Cocoon Fest organized by the cyber police and whether Monson used Anitha’s connections to commit the scam. Anitha’s role in Monson’s financial dealings was also questioned. It is reported that the crime branch will not summon Anitha, who is settled in Italy, to Kerala for the investigation. However, based on Anitha’s statement, the crime branch will question Monson again in detail. Based on the information obtained, a decision will be made on whether to summon Anitha.
There were reports that Anitha had introduced many wealth pravasis to Monson, many of whom were defrauded and extorted. Anitha had earlier told a private channel that she had introduced Monson to former DGP Lokanath Behra. Former driver Aji had revealed that Anitha knew everything about Monson’s antiquities fraud and used his museum as her office.
