Monstera albo

Monstera albo (Monstera Deliciosa Borsigiana Variegata) is a type of variegated Monstera deliciosa known for its split leaves and striking marbled coloring.[1] Instead of fully green leaves like the classic Monstera deliciosa, the Monstero albo variety has a mixture of white and lighter shades of green.

Variegation is the appearance of differently colored zones in the leaves, and sometimes the stems, of plants. It is caused by a lack of chlorophyll in the plant's cells. There are several causes of this lack of chlorophyll, including:

  • cell mutation
  • fungal disease
  • nutrient deficiency

Monstera albo is in high demand. Thursd named it one of the most popular (and expensive) plants in the world, citing a particular Monstera albo plant that sold at auction for almost $5,000 on the New Zealand website Trade Me.[2] The reason for the high price tag comes down to basic economics. The plant is in high demand, but the supply is limited. It cannot be grown from a seed, only from cuttings.

Care recommendations for Monstera albo are similar to those for Monstera deliciosa. They grow best in low light and allow the soil to dry in between waterings.

Other types of variegated Monsteras:

  • Monstera deliciosa "Thai Constellation"
  • Monstera deliciosa "Aurea"
  • Mint Monstera
  • Monstera deliciosa "Variegata"
