Montague Birrell Black (29 March 1884) was a British painter and illustrator.
Biography
Montague Birrell Black was a renowned painter, illustrator, and poster artist.[1]
He produced lithographs for the White Star Line, the London Underground Group, and the London and North Eastern Railway.
Born in Stockwell, London, England, on March 29, 1884, he started his career as a Lithographic Artist at the age of seventeen, after attending Stockwell College in London.
Between 1910 and 1936, Black created numerous posters and illustrations of the HMS Titanic and her sister ship, HMS Olympic, immediately after the delivery of the vessels from the shipyard.[2]
He also created decorative map posters for the British Railways and LNER.[3]
In 1926, he painted one of his more renowned works that is currently on display at the London Transport Museum, London, “2026 A.D. - This is all in the Air”, which was designed to illustrate a future London where airships were the primary mode of transportation.[4]
During World War II, Black served as a War Correspondent for the Toronto Star.
Black died in 1964 in Kensington, London.
