Montana Highway 43 (MT 43) is a roughly 77.3-mile-long (124.4 km) state highway in the west-central part of the US state of Montana, and runs for approximately Template:One2a in Lemhi County, Idaho.

Route description

MT 43 begins at U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) at the Lost Trail Pass right along the Idaho–Montana state line. Almost immediately after beginning, it runs for a short mile without any junction in Lemhi County, Idaho, and it then crosses into Beaverhead County, Montana. The Big Hole National Battlefield is located on MT 43 16.5 miles east of Lost Trail Pass. It enters Wisdom 24.8 miles (39.9 km) east of Chief Joseph Pass, and it intersects Secondary Highway 278 (S-278) before heading 38.1 miles (61.3 km) to the northeast into Wise River. The last major destination is 10.9 miles (17.5 km) to the east in Divide before the state highway ends at Interstate 15 (I-15) southwest of Butte.

History

Much of the present day alignment of MT 43 was shown on the state highway map beginning in 1949, though MT 43 ended at Gibbon's Pass instead of Lost Trail Pass.[1] By 1960, the route was shown to end at Lost Trail Pass.[2]
