Montgomery Center was a mall in South Elgin, Illinois. It originally opened in 1956 and closed in 2017. The only remaining anchors are Kohl's and Von Maur.

History

The mall opened in 1956 with Sears, Marshall Field's, Montgomery Ward, Saks Fifth Avenue, Younkers, and Wieboldt's. Younkers closed its store in 1967 for a Lord & Taylor that would fill the space in 1976. Saks closed and demolished its store in 1978 to make way for I. Magnin, which would open in 1980. In 1983, Wieboldt's closed and was replaced by MainStreet in 1985. MainStreet quickly rebranded to Kohl's in 1989. Lord & Taylor sold its store to Carson's in 1990. In 1991, I. Magnin closed and was filled by JCPenney in 1992. In 1997, Montgomery Ward shut its doors, which became Von Maur in 2000. In 2006, Marshall Field's was converted to Macy's. In 2011, JCPenney closed. In 2016, Sears closed its store, leaving no original anchors to the mall. In March 2017, the mall announced it would close permanently along with Macy's, with the exception of Carson's, Kohl's, and Von Maur, which would continue to operate. The mall, along with Macy's, closed in October 2017. In 2018, Carson's closed due to Bon-Ton bankruptcy.
