Morgan James Peters
Morgan James Peters (born June 6, 1968), better known professionally as Mwalim Daphunkee Professor, is an American recording artist, songwriter, producer, playwright, author, and businessman from Bronx, New York. Peters was raised in Bronx, New York as well as Mashpee, Massachusetts. He is a mixed-genre recording artist who performs NUJazz, Afro House, and Soul. He first broke into the music industry in 1990 with his first solo release entitled, "Her Song". After starting his Midnight Groove Recordings record label, Peters followed up with his debut EP, "3A.M." in the spring of 1991. Four years later, Peters released his debut LP entitled, "Voices Of My Ancestors". He released his next single "Thief In The Night" in 1999. He signed a major record deal in 2002. Peters' next EP entitled, "Jazzy Soul Club Grooves" was released the next year. After a brief hiatus, he released his next album "Liberation Sessions: Soul Of The City" in 2010. Peters' next album "Deep Soul Chants And Hollers" would be released in 2012. His very next album "Awakened By A Noon Day Sun" was released in 2014. In 2021, Peters released three singles: Paradise Over Peace (Bippie Mix Single) on 6/2021, It Just Is on 7/2021, and Paradise Over Peace (AfroHouse) on 9/9/2021, respectively. Peters has performed with a list of A-list performers including The Four Tops, Angie Stone, The Last Poets, and Dizzy Gillespie. Peters has been nominated for numerous awards including New England Urban Music Award - Best Male Jazz Artist in 2010 (won), 2012 (won), and 2014 (won). Silver Arrow Award - Outstanding Contributions To Native American Music in 2012 (won). As a member and co-founder of The Groovalottos, he received a total of six Grammy nominations for their "Ask Yo Mama" LP. As a member of The Groovalottos in 2016, he wrote and performed "Do You Mind..." which spent 41 weeks in the top ten of the Indie Blue Charts. Numerous songs from their Ask Yo Mama album charted in 2017 and 2017 as well. Peters was a recipient of an Osborne Trust Grant for media arts production from 2014-2019. He published a novel in 2020 called "Land Of The Black Squirrels". As a playwright, his work has been performed throughout the United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. Peters has been a regular panelist on "Greater Boston" for WGBH/PBS. Peters is currently in the studio working on a mixtape entitled, "Polymath's Grotto" which is slated for a winter of 2021 release as well as a Jazz/Afrobeat album entitled, "Down Streeter's Suite" which is scheduled for a spring of 2022 release date.
