Moritz Wanger is a German composer and music producer specialising in writing for media and contemporary classical music. His compositions blend orchestral and electronic elements with a focus on minimalism and conceptual foundations.[1] Films featuring Wanger’s scores have been screened at prestigious international festivals, and his music has been used in major brand campaigns.[2] His neoclassical piano project, Regnør, has gained significant recognition and has been featured on major editorial playlists on Spotify and Apple Music. The project has played a role in shaping the modern neoclassical landscape.[3]
Early life and education
Moritz Wanger was born in Germany, and grew up in a musical family, with grandparents who were both musicians at the Mannheim National Theatre. He began studying piano at age five, saxophone at nine, and guitar at thirteen, the latter inspiring his decision to pursue music professionally.[4] As a teenager, he performed in bands that toured across Germany and was nominated for the Deutscher Rock & Pop Preis in 2011.[5]
Wanger initially studied jazz as an early student at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim but later chose to focus on Popular Music.[6] In 2014, he moved to London, where he completed a Bachelor of Music in Popular Music Performance at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance[7] and received the Best Student of the Year award at graduation. He later obtained a Master of Arts in Composing for Film and Television from the National Film and Television School in 2021.[8]
Career
Wanger began his career as a freelance composer, arranger, and producer, focusing on creating music for media. His work spans films, documentaries, games, and advertisements for notable clients such as Mercedes, Audi, DJI, and Bremont.[9] He has composed for music labels such as Audio Network, Ninja Tune, Musicbed.[10]
Notable Works
Films scored by Wanger have been screened at international film festivals, including:
- Maison (2024), premiered at the St Kilda Short Film Festival[11] (Oscar-Qualifying) in Australia.
- Stones (2023), which won Best Budget Short at the Kino Film Festival and was selected for the Aesthetica Short Film and Animation Festival (BAFTA and BIFA-Qualifying).[12]
- Build Me Up (2021), nominated for a Sound and Music Award[13] and winner of the V.I.Z Best Music Award.[14]

His documentary work has also been screened at festivals, including the Sheffield DocFest, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, Jackson Wild, and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.
Regnør Project
In 2020, Wanger launched his neo-classical project Regnør, which is centred on solo piano compositions. The project has been featured on major Spotify and Apple Music playlists, including Peaceful Piano and New Classical Releases on Spotify, as well as Apple Music’s New In Classical and Calm playlist.[16]
Style and Approach
Wanger’s compositions often blend orchestral elements with synthesisers, characterised by a cinematic sound and a structured, conceptual approach.[17]
Personal life
After nearly a decade in London, Wanger relocated to Australia in 2023.[18]
