Morumbi virus

The Morumbi virus (MRMBV) is a strain of the Candiru virus species which is part of the genus Phlebovirus.[1][2][3][4][5] It is one of three known strains of the Candiru virus, alongside the Candiru virus and the Serra Norte virus.[1] While it is unknown what it is transmitted by, it is thought that it is transmitted by mosquitos, ticks and phlebotomine sandflies.[6]

It was first discovered in 1988 when it was isolated from a human in Tucuruí in the province of Pará in Brazil and has currently not been found outside of the country.[1][7][8] It is a self-limiting febrile illness.[1][7][8]

Symptoms

While it is not completely clear what the symptoms for the virus are, it is believed to have very similar symptoms to the Candiru virus and other Phleboviruses, meaning that most cases are asymptomatic but the symptoms include: fever; malaise; anorexia; abdominal symptoms and pains; photophobia and rashes.[1] Many Phleboviruses that are spread by sandflies are known to cause mild fevers which typically last short periods of time, normally around three days; meaning MRMBV is also believed to cause this short-lasting fever.[9] However, some Phleboviruses can cause more severe infections so Morumbi virus could also be a more severe one.[9] It is not known though as there have not been sufficient cases to find out.

Related strains

MRMBV forms a serocomplex of related viruses with other phlebovirus strains and species, including the following:[7][10]

The serocomplex, Candiru, Alenquer, Echarate, Maldonado, Morumbi and Serra Norte were all isolated from people suffering from a febrile illness; however, the others were isolated from mosquitoes and sandflies.[7][10]
