Moscow Center for Consciousness Studies (MCCS) is a research unit at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University, it focuses on the mind-body problem, free will, moral responsibility, artificial intelligence and personal identity.[1]
History[edit]
The Center was founded in 2009 at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University at a joint initiative of professor Vadim Vasiliev and Dmitry Volkov. The Center’s field of research is philosophy of consciousness, as well as problems of personal identity, free will and moral responsibility. It collaborates with the global scientific community and popularizes analytic philosophy in Russia.[2][3][4]
Since summer 2014, Center started to hold summer schools where it gathers young scholars and world lead experts in philosophy.[5]
Structure and activities[edit]
Center is affiliated to Faculty of Philosophy of the Moscow State University and focuses on the mind-body problem, free will, moral responsibility, artificial intelligence and personal identity. Center has 7 employees, who performs lectures at the Faculty of Philosophy and other MSU faculties and, time to time, attend to a various events aimed at popularizing science to promote philosophy.[6] Center works in collaboration with a different philosophers and organizations over the globe. It attends to a different events abroad and organizes its own with the participation of invited foreign experts such as John Searle,[7] John Fisher,[8] Richard Swinburne,[3] Daniel Dennett[9] and Derk Pereboom.[4] Another part of their work is organizing summer schools where students gather to study under the direction of the world's leading experts of the different philosophical disciplines.[4][5][10][11][12][13]
The Center's team participated in the preparation of an issue of the " Logos" journal, dedicated to the free will problem[14], and an issue of the "Epistemology and Philosophy of Science" journal. Another project of MCCS is the translation of selected articles of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy into Russian.[6]
Management[edit]
The activities of the organization are determined by the Center’s co-directors: MSU professors V. V. Vasiliev, D. V. Volkov and Robert Howell. Anton Kuznetsov, Artem Besedin, Andrey Mertsalov and Evgeny Loginov report to them directly.
The Center's Board of Trustees also includes:

- Paul Churchland,Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego
- Derk Pereboom, Professor of Philosophy at Cornell University.
