Motoguo (stylized as motoguo) is a Malaysian androgynous fashion brand founded in 2015. The company was founded in 2015, by designer Moto Guo and Jay Perry Ang, accompanied by Kinder Eng.[1] Initially starting off as a menswear label, motoguo has since become a genderless label, with products varying from suits, casual wear, shoes and accessories.

History

The brand got its start with a collaboration project with photographer Zhong Lin to work on an editorial featuring founder Moto's graduation collection.[2] The editorial was later submitted to and featured in the online magazine Fucking Young, which caught the attention of buyers in Japan and UK.[1][3]

Style and influence

motoguo's aesthetic is a colorful mix of maxi-volumes, deconstruction, patchwork and genderfluid silhouettes.[3] In an interview, Guo cites Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck, Japanese label Jenny Fax, and Alexander McQueen as the brand's biggest influences.[4]

Collaborations

In 2016, motoguo presented ‘SS17: Picnic In the Society’ at Milan Fashion Week sponsored by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI)[5], featuring collaborations with Unagi Wong from Wanpi Co, a leather goods crafter with minimalist and functional designs.[6]

In 2017, motoguo worked with Sofya Samereya for a series of sculptural and wearable headpieces, and Percy Lau on the quirky eyewear for their Fall Winter 2017 collection titled “Strawberry Fields Forever & Ever”. [7] The collection was then part of an exclusive showcase hosted by Giorgio Armani for the coming Milan Men’s Fashion Week.[8] Soon after, motoguo worked with Levi’s Malaysia to create and curate a capsule collection that was then displayed in multiple mini-exhibitions in Levi's boutiques around Kuala Lumpur.[9] Later in the year, motoguo created a capsule collection in collaboration with Mini Cooper China x Labelhood project, being one of the first Malaysian brand/label to collaborate with Mini Cooper China.[10] The collection was then launched in October 2017.

In 2018, motoguo collaborated with Mickey Mouse China to create a full look in celebration of Mickey's 90th Anniversary. The look was then showcased during Shanghai Fashion Week[11]

In 2020, motoguo presented a video in collaboration with Lelecha and Super Elle for Tmall China Cool.[12]
