Motor Island Wildlife Management Area is a 6-acre State Wildlife Management Area in Erie County, in the U.S. state of New York. The park is part of Grand Island, northeast of Buffalo. The park lies on the Niagara River between Grand Island and the Town of Tonawanda. It is restricted from the public in order to protect colonial water birds. Hunting is allowed during waterfowl season by permit only.[1]
Geography and Ecology
Motor Island is a part of a neighboring shoal area known as Strawberry Island/Motor Island Shallows, designated a Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitat in 1987. The “Shallows” is the largest riverine littoral zone in the Niagara River, with water depths ranging from eighteen inches to five feet. Strawberry Island/Motor Island Shallows is part of one of the most important waterfowl wintering areas in the northeastern United States, especially for diving ducks.[2] Motor Island is home to a variety of aquatic vegetation such as Chara, pondweed and tape grass with a substrate of mostly clay, gravel and sand.[3]
History
In 1815, Motor Island, along with Strawberry Island and Grand Island, was purchased for $11,000 from the Seneca.[4] The area was purchased in 1996 by the DEC with funding from the 1996 Environmental Quality Bond Act. The area was acquired to protect habitat for a unique group of colonial nesting birds, which is part of a large significant coastal habitat critical to the Niagara River ecosystem.[5]
Public Use
Hunting is permitted during waterfowl season with a requisite permit.[6]
