Moulin Blues is an annual blues and roots festival held in Ospel, the Netherlands. The festival was founded in 1986. [1] Originally the festival consisted of one day with one stage, since 1995 it consist of two days with two stages. Moulin Blues traditionally takes place on the first weekend of May.

Over the years, numerous national and international artists have performed at the festival, including BB King, Buddy Guy, The Red Devils, John Mayall and Joe Bonamassa.

On Saturday, May 2, 1998, Lester Butler, former frontman of The Red Devils, gave his last performance at the Moulin Blues festival alongside his band ‘13’. Tragically, after returning to Los Angeles, Butler passed away on May 9 at the age of 38 [2], succumbing to a cocaine overdose [3]. The circumstances surrounding his demise took a legal turn, as two friends involved in the overdose were subsequently convicted of involuntary manslaughter. [4] A decade later, in 2008, “Stichting Rhythm & Blues Ospel” commemorated the tenth anniversary of Butler’s passing by releasing the DVD “LESTER BUTLER FEATURING ‘13’ – Live at Moulin Blues 1998”.

Rhythm & Blues Ospel Foundation[edit]

The annual Moulin Blues festival is organized on a voluntary basis by the Rhythm & Blues Ospel Foundation. In 2022, the foundation achieved the Dutch ANBI (Algemeen nut beogende instelling) status, affirming its dedication to serving a public interest. Moulin Blues is made possible every year together with the help of more than five hundred volunteers from the nearby area. The Rhythm & Blues Ospel Foundation operates completely independently, without direct involvement of commercial event organizations.
