Samuel Cox, known as Mr Doodle, (born March 8, 1994 in Kent, England), is a British urban artist and illustrator known for his unique style of detailed doodling.

His work appears in a variety of media from clothing to walls and to anything he can touch. His works are often in black and white, with a wide range of characters, concepts and line drawings. They often take a long time to figure out as they are made up of a labyrinth of unique and fantastical creatures that may not be apparent at first glance[1]. Mr Doodle's graffiti style seems very similar to Keith Haring's. The artist has admitted that he was deeply influenced by the New York illustrator[2].

Biography[edit]

Sam Cox started drawing as a child and since then has continued to draw compulsively on any surface he can find, trying to fill every empty space with a doodle[1].

He started sharing images of his art on Instagram in May 2013. By October 2022, he had 2.7 million followers.

In 2017, he created a 40 m2 urban art fresco at the Anneessens-Funck Institute in Brussels[3].

From August the 18th to 20th 2017, he carried out an illustration marathon by decorating the entire walls and furniture of a shop on Carnaby Street in London for 50 hours in a row[4].

In 2019, responding to criticism that his graffiti was not good enough and not aesthetically pleasing to be considered a type of art, Mr. Doodle recreates classic paintings in a fun way and exhibits them at a world-renowned auction: Sotheby's. So he organised an exhibition sale in Hong Kong called "Mr. Doodle Invades Sotheby's"[5]. Before the exhibition had even started, all the works had been sold, 52 pieces in total.

In October 2022 he revealed a huge project, started two years earlier, in September 2020. It was the complete doodling of a 12-room mansion in his home region[6]. He also painted the entire exterior of a Tesla Model 3 car[7].

The mansion[edit]

In 2019, Mr Doodle buys a house valued at US$1.5M in Kent and, with the help of family and friends, turns it into a perfectly white canvas, ready for his doodles. Bed sheets, toilet seats, kitchen utensils, lampshades and the computer mouse are all scribbled on with no surface left blank[8]

On October the 1st 2022, he uploaded a stop motion video to showcase his performance.[9].  He claims not to have used any CGI. Instead, the animation was made from 1,857 photographs taken between September 2020 and September 2022. This mansion is said to be his main place of residence[6]

Personal life[edit]

Mr Doodle is married to artist Alena Cox, also known as Mrs Doodle. They met in 2018 and were married in August 2021[10]
