Muhammad Raynan Rizky Akbar (born 9 April 2005)[1] is an Indonesian activist[2], civil organizer[3], and Founder of the NGO Aktivis Indonesia[4]. He is known for leading student movements especially as the initiator for 2025 Indonesian Protest, advocating for civic participation, and organizing campaigns on social and political issues[5]. Raynan has been active in student government at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Brawijaya and has played a key role in strengthening critical awareness among students in Indonesia’s medical academic community[6].
Early life
Muhammad Raynan Rizky Akbar was born on 9 April 2005 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia[1]. He was raised in East Java in a family with a medical and professional background[7]. His father, Darwan Triyono, is an ophthalmologist who has served as director of RS Daha Husada in Kediri[8]. Raynan is the eldest of three children. He grew up in an environment that emphasized education and social responsibility. During his early years, he developed an interest in public issues, education, and social debate, which later influenced his involvement in activism[9].
Education
Senior education
Raynan completed his senior education at SMAN 2 Kota Kediri, a public senior high school in East Java[10]. While in high school, he participated in student organizations and discussion forums that addressed educational policy, student representation, and social issues. These activities marked his early engagement with civic and political discourse[11].
University education
In 2023, Raynan enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Brawijaya (Universitas Brawijaya) in Malang as part of the 2023 intake. While pursuing his medical studies, he became active in student governance and advocacy-related activities, particularly those involving political awareness among students in health and medical faculties[3].
Legacy
Movement initiator and analyst
Raynan became involved in the Student Executive Board (Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa, BEM) of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Brawijaya[6]. In 2024, he served as an active member of the organization, contributing to advocacy work, policy discussions, and internal student education initiatives. His role involved participation in research teams, drafting position statements, and organizing discussion forums[2]. In 2025, Raynan was appointed Minister of Action, Research, and Propaganda of the Faculty of Medicine Student Executive Board[11]. This position combined responsibilities related to strategic planning, political communication, and mobilization of students for advocacy actions[9]. As minister, he coordinated:
- Internal political education programs
- Research and analysis related to public policy
- Student participation in demonstrations and public actions
- Communication strategies directed at both students and the wider public
He also played a role in linking medical students with broader university-level and inter-campus student movements.
Raynan’s activism is centered on issues of democracy, civil liberties, and state accountability. His work reflects a broader tradition of student activism in Indonesia, where university students have historically played a role in political reform movements[12].
He has emphasized the importance of student participation in public discourse, particularly in responding to government policies that affect education, civil rights, and democratic institutions[13].
Aktivis Indonesia Foundation
In 2023, Raynan founded Aktivis Indonesia, an independent non-governmental organization (NGO)[5]. The organization was established as a platform for civic expression, political education, and public advocacy[14]. Raynan serves as the organization’s Central Coordinator overseeing its general direction and activities[4].
According to its stated mission, Aktivis Indonesia aims to provide an open platform for public opinion and criticism, disseminate analysis on social, political, and economic issues, encourage civic participation, particularly among youth, promote awareness of human rights and democratic principles. The organization identifies itself as non-partisan and independent of political parties[15]. Aktivis Indonesia operates primarily through digital platforms, including online publications and social media. Its activities include issuing public statements, producing educational content, and supporting solidarity actions related to social and political issues[16].
