Muhammad Yousuf is a professor of mathematics at the Hazara University, Mansehra, Pakistan, who works in the area of history of mathematics.

Early life

Muhammad Yousuf was born in July 1946, in the village of Maira Amjad Ali, of district Mansehra. His father Ghulam Haider worked in the land and revenue department. He received his early education from Mansehra and Abbottabad.


Education

He did his Masters from the University of Peshawar in 1969, securing a University gold medal and receiving the President of Pakistan's Award. He then received a scholarship for higher education from the University of California, Berkeley, but his plans were cut short due to the Indo-Pak war of 1971. He later completed his PhD from the University of St. Andrews, UK, under the supervision of Professor Edmund F. Robertson.[1]

Career

He joined Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, as a faculty member in 1975, and went on to become the chairman of the department, and served in that position for over 15 years. After his retirement in 2004, he was appointed as professor and chairman of the Mathematics department of the newly established Hazara University at his hometown of Mansehra. He served in this position until April 2013, and played a pivotal role in the development of the faculty and streamlining the rules and procedures of the nascent institution.

Positions

He has been a member of the curricula review committee of the Higher Education Commission in Mathematics, responsible for the development of the BS, MS and PhD curricula in Pakistan. He has also served as a sub-editor of the Gomal Journal of Research. He has also served as a member of the senate of Gomal University, and a member of the senate, syndicate, academic council, affiliation committee and discipline committee of Hazara University for several years. He was elected as vice president of the Gomal University academic staff association.
