Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury popularly known as Nixon Chowdhury, is a Bangladeshi politician and the incumbent Member of Parliament from Faridpur-4. He is a relative of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Early life[edit]
Chowdhury was born on 3 March 1978 to Ilias Ahmed Chowdhury and Sheikh Feroza Begum. He studied up to SSC or grade ten.[1] His paternal grandmother was Sheikh Fatema Begum, eldest sister of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his maternal grandmother was Sheikh Amena Begum, the second sister of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. His parents were first-cousins. His brother Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury is a member of parliament.[2]
Career[edit]
Chowdhury has been elected as a member of parliament for the 2nd time in 2018 Bangladeshi general election from Faridpur-4 constituency. He beat Awami League candidate Kazi Zafarullah. Previously he was elected to Parliament for the first time from Faridpur-4 as an independent rebel candidate beating Awami League candidate and the then Member of Parliament from Faridpur-4, Nilufer Zafar Ullah.[2][3]
Controversy[edit]
Chowdhury was criticised for his role in the Padma Bridge graft scandal.[4][5][6] SNC-Lavalin admitted to bribing him in order to obtain contracts.[7][8] He was questioned by the Anti-Corruption Commission regarding this case. Soon after the case emanated, Sheikh Hasina disavowed her nephew and campaigned for his opponent during the 2014 Bangladeshi general election.[9]
Personal life[edit]
Chowdhury was married to Muntarin Mujib Chowdhury. They have a daughter together. Muntarin died on 30 April 2014 after falling from the roof of their 6-storey residential building in Gulshan.[10]
