Mullingar Park Hotel is a hotel in Marlinstown, Westmeath, Ireland located 2.43 kilometres (1.51 mi) from Mullingar town centre.[1]
History[edit]
Origins[edit]
Seán and Josephine Hughes, former owners of the Newbury Hotel which they had opened in 1990, applied to Westmeath County Council to purchase 22.35 acres (9.04 ha) of land at Marlinstown on 7 September 1998.[2] A few months later, in February 1999, negotiations were ongoing with the Marlinstown hotel site. Seán and Josephine were seeking permission for a 94 bedroom four star hotel in a 85,000 square feet (7,900 m2) complex which would also include function rooms, conference facilities, a restaurant, a bar and leisure centre as well as 76 aparthotel units.[3]
On 29 May 1999, it was announced that Westmeath County Council had approved the £1,341,000 (Error when using {{Inflation}}: |index=UK
(parameter 1) not a recognized index.) sale of land at Marlinstown.[4] Permission was granted for a four star hotel and aparthotels to be constructed, while outline permission was granted for a business park and 34 detached houses on 14 August 1999.[5]
In June 2000, the hotel was granted a declaratory order stating the hotel's fitness and convenience to receive an excise licence.[6] The hotel's management company was registered on 23 August 2000 as Euro Plaza Hotel Limited, trading as Mullingar Park Hotel.[7]
Opening[edit]
The hotel was opened its doors for the first time on 17 September 2003 at a cost of €18 million (Error when using {{Inflation}}: |index=EU
(parameter 1) not a recognized index.).[8][9][10]
Joshua Gribble[edit]
On 31 August 2003, a 13-year-old boy named Joshua Gribble was playing in a large 4 feet (1.2 m) cement pipe used for manholes in a construction site adjacent to the hotel which then collapsed on top of him.[11] A friend ran to Gribble's nearby home and alerted his father who then called emergency services. The youth was rushed to the Midland Regional Hospital and went through surgeries, but subsequently died from his injuries.[12] Gribble had relocated to Mullingar from Cynon Valley, Wales with his family a few years earlier. Due to the tragic incident, the opening of the hotel was delayed as a mark of respect to Joshua.[13] In addition to the death of a 24-year-old man in Youghal welding on an oil tanker, the Health and Safety Authority launched investigations.[14]
On 30 November 2006, SF Hughes Construction Ltd pleaded guilty to criminal negligence, and the Gribbles were awarded €100,000 in damages. It was also said that there was no fence surrounding the building site despite being warned previously, and that the pipes were not stored securely.[15] The Gribble family had moved from Mullingar following the incident in 2003.[16]
