Multilingua is a peer-reviewed academic journal in linguistics, specializing in the sociolinguistics of multilingualism, language learning, intercultural communication, and translation and interpreting. Also known as "Journal of Cross-Cultural and Interlanguage Communication", the journal publishes six issues per year.[1]

Multilingua was established in 1982 and is published by de Gruyter Mouton.

Publication history

Multilingua was established in 1982 with the support of the Commission of the European Communities to "provide an interface between the Institutions and the members of the public who are interested in multilingualism, be they teachers, translators or interpreters, computer experts, publishers or librarians, businessmen or politicians."[2]

The founding editor was Professor Juan Carlos Sager (Manchester University), who edited the journal until 1987.[2] Professor Sager was succeeded as editor-in-chief by Professor Richard Watts (Berne University, 1987–2013). Since Professor Watts' retirement in 2013, Multilingua has been edited by Distinguished Professor Ingrid Piller (Macquarie University).[1]
