Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon[edit]

Sani Ibn-Sireen Sheikh-ul-Hadith Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon is a Pakistani-American and international Sunni Hanafi Hadith scholar elucidating the Islamic deen brought by Prophet Muhammad SAW. His teachings on Islam are sourced from the Quran and Hadiths. He is one of the most influential Islamic preachers in the current decade, having been honoured with the title of “Mufti Azam America”, (The grand scholar in Americas). Muneer Akhoon’s primary goal is to unite all Muslims. He has not only received numerous international awards, but also deeply influenced many individuals worldwide with his knowledge and personality.

Early Life & Education[edit]

Muneer Akhoon was born within 1968 in the city of Bahawalnagar located in Southeast region of Punjab province of Pakistan. His Turkic ancestors migrated in the pursuit of traditional Islamic knowledge from the province of Xinjiang China to India and thereafter to Pakistan (see section “Spiritual Lineage” for ancestors). As a result his Islamic knowledge was preached in his early life from both his father (Mufti Niyaz Muhammad Khutanī Turkistānī Bukhari) and mother (Syyida Amna Khatun). In fact from his mother’s side he is a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad SAW through Husayn ibn Ali lineage.

As a teenage boy Muneer was involved in playing numerous types of sports. Due to Muneer’s childhood intelligence, his father preached him about Islam and Muneer was able to grasp such knowledge about the deen rapidly. As a teenager, Muneer’s father enrolled him into an undergraduate degree program, earning a Bachelor of Theology (Darse-Nizami) from Jamia-Uloom, Binnori Town, located in Karachi, Pakistan. Working towards being an Islamic scholar, after his undergraduate degree, Muneer then earned a Master of Arts degree in Classical Islamic Theology, with specialization in the explanation of the Holy Quran from Wifaqul-Madaris in Al-Arabia, Pakistan. In the year 1988, Dr. Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon completed his PhD in Islamic Jurisprudence & Legal Verdict from Jamia-tul-Uloom Al-Islamia, Binnori Town, Karachi Pakistan, where he was mentored by Mufti Nizamud-deen Shamzi. Muneer’s final education consisted of specializing in modern Islamic financial economics/business from Usmani, Jamia Darul-Uloom, Karachi, supervised by arguably the most knowledgeable in the field of Islamic finance, Muhammad Taqi Usmani.

Along side such secular academic studies, Muneer has also been granted the title of “Mufti”. A Mufti title is given to an Islamic scholar, who studies for ten years in a seminary and then spends several years shadowing or mentored by senior scholars. As such the title of Mufti allows the authorization to rule verdict(s)/Fatwa(s) on any Islamic issue in the public.

After spending numerous years as a Mufti in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2001, Muneer Akhoon settled with his family in Queens, New York, serving as the Director of Religious Affairs at Westchester Muslim Center. In 2005, Muneer Akhoon established Al-Muneer Foundation, a non-profit organization to server the religious and spiritual needs of the Muslim community in New York. This project with a humble beginning has now become an international organization, providing several services to humanity (see section “Societal Duties and Responsibilities”).

By the year 2017, for his exceptional services in providing guidance through his wise, logical, and unifying Fatwa’s, Dr. Mufti Muneer Ahmed Akhoon was awarded the title of “Grand Mufti of America” by a large body of scholars in the United States.

Muneer Akhoon is also a Sufi Master, with several thousand students all over the world. He is one of the very few spiritual leaders in the world to gain ordination in all four major schools of spirituality in Islam. With more than forty generations in the past, his established spiritual lineage traces him back to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). One of the rare specializations of Dr. Akhoon is providing dream interpretations. People from all over the world, including several global leaders and celebrities communicate with him not only because of his unique knowledge and wisdom, but also his tremendous ability to interpret dreams, a rare skill admired by many around the world.

Through Islamic knowledge and his experience, Muneer tries to unite the ‘Umma’, especially on major challenges which often contemplate Muslims around the world.

For instance, one of the major issues revolving around ‘Global Moonsighting’, especially the start/finish to the Holy month of Ramadan. Just as how Muslims worldwide pray facing the Kaaba in Mecca, Muneer believes that a way to unite the ‘Umma’ is by having the same start and finish to the month of Ramadan, including Eid occurring globally on the same day. A vision that has been appreciated by many scholars worldwide.
