Munyaradzi Chanetsa
Munyaradzi Hamandishe Yemurai Chanetsa (born 28 January 1984) is a Zimbabwean music industry executive, educator, and consultant.[1] His work and career have been profiled in media including Billboard, BBC News, and GQ South Africa.[2][3][4] He is the Managing Director: Africa at EMPIRE Publishing[5] and founder of Masters of the Industry Africa (M.O.T.I Africa) and Kreeyate Africa.[6]
Early life and education
Chanetsa was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, on 28 January 1984. He studied at Curtin University in Australia, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Advertising in 2006.[7] He later completed professional courses with Henley Business School in South Africa and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) focusing on management in the creative industries.[8]
Career
Chanetsa has held positions in publishing, licensing, and digital distribution within the music industry. He is currently Managing Director: Africa at EMPIRE Publishing,[9] where he works with African songwriters and producers including Asake, Fireboy DML, and Blaise Beatz. In 2023, Billboard reported that EMPIRE’s launch in South Africa, which included Chanetsa’s appointment, marked an expansion of the company’s African operations.[10]
From February 2019 to June 2020, Chanetsa served as Head of Licensing and New Business at the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of South Africa (CAPASSO).[11] From 2020 to 2022, he was A&R Manager for Africa at Sony Music Publishing, where he organized songwriting camps and facilitated collaborations between African and international artists.[12]
Earlier in his career, he worked as Promotions and Marketing Manager at Putumayo World Music in South Africa, running regional campaigns for the global label.[13]
Initiatives
Chanetsa founded Masters of the Industry Africa (M.O.T.I Africa), an online platform providing music business education and resources for African creatives.[14] In August 2023, he partnered with Trace Academia to launch a music business course on its mobile learning platform.[15][16]
Advocacy
In 2020, Chanetsa launched Happy Endings: The Mbube Story, a project inspired by Solomon Linda, composer of the song Mbube. The initiative highlighted issues of copyright and compensation in African music and was covered internationally, including by the BBC.[17]
