Murat Karagöz (14 August 1967 – 30 June 2023) was a Turkish diplomat. He served as Turkish ambassador in both Mongolia and Jordan. He was until his death, the Turkish ambassador to Lisbon, Portugal (a position he resumed on 15 March 2023). He served as director of information and communications[1] and held various positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Karagöz, born in Istanbul on 14 August 1967. He was a student at the Istanbul Boys High School, leaving in 1985 before completing a first degree at University of Istanbul, Faculty of Economics, Department of International Relations in 1989. In 2007, He obtained his master's degree (Political Science) in the United States from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York.[3][4]

Death[edit]

Karagöz died as a result of a cardiac arrest that struck him during a recreational swimming activity at a beach near Faralya Bay in Ölüdeniz district. He was pronounced dead after he was rushed to a hospital in Fethiye with an ambulance. Karagöz was 55.[10] He was survived by one child.[6]

Foreign minister Hakan Fidan and his predecessor Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu joined host of Turkish, European and other global diplomats and expats to express their condolences.[11]
