[[1]][2] Houston Police Department Chief Art Acevedo did not believe it was a random attack. In a tweet from the Houston police account, Acevedo said, "There's a high probability the doctor was targeted." The FBI assisted Houston police with the investigation.[3] Houston police issued an arrest warrant for 65-year-old Joseph James Pappas, whose mother died during a medical procedure Dr. Mark Hausknecht performed on her many years ago. Police discovered evidence linking Pappas to the murder. [8] The suspect was a former Harris County constable for almost 30 years.[9] The suspect, Joseph James Pappas, fatally shot himself in the head while wearing a bullet proof vest when police officers approached him in a residential neighborhood.[4]
