In August and Septembr 1976 Elibeth Plunkett and Mary Duffy were abducted, raped, tortured, and subsequently murdered. John Shaw and Geoffrey Evans were convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

John Shaw and Geoffrey Evans[edit]

Shaw and Evans where both Englishmen from the Greater Manchester Area.[1] The pair met in prison while serving sentences for burglary. They concocted a plan to abduct, rape, and murder women upon their release from prison.[2]

Already under investigation in England for several sexual assaults they had been linked, and fearing further charges being laid against them, the pair decided to travel to Ireland. The men had decided to fund a pre planned murder spree in Ireland by committing burglaries.[3] After commuting burglaries in the Wicklow, Clonmel, and Cork areas, they were charged with 16 counts of burglary. They appeared at Cork Circuit Cork on the 5th of February 1975, and were both given two year prison sentences. While serving their sentences they were transferred to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

In August 1976 they appeared in court facing extradition to the U.K. face answer charges for sexual assault and rape cases they had been linked to. They were released on a bond of £40, and given one month to prepare a case against their extradition.

Having befriended a man named Cliff Outram in Mountjoy, they travelled to his home in Fethard, County Tipperary. Outram had access to a car, a grey Austin A40. They pair asked to borrow the car for a few days, and Outram agreed.

Murder of Elizabeth Plunkett[edit]

Elizabeth Plunkett was a 23 year old currency clerk living in Ringsend, Co.Dublin. On Saturday August 28th, she travelled with her boyfriend and five other friends to Brittas Bay, Co.Wicklow, to spend the weekend at a caravan park. After arriving at Brittas, she went to McDaniels pub with her friend. Following a long argument between her friends regarding the sale of a car, Elizabeth left the pub by herself at 11pm.

Shaw and Evans had travelled to Wicklow, having collected a suitcase belonging to Evans from Heuston Station. The pair were familiar with the Wicklow area from their previous burglaries there. They happened to be in Brittas on the night of the 28th of August.
