Mush-Mush & the Mushables (French: Mush-Mush et les Champotes, or simply Mush-Mush) is an International Emmy nominated French-Belgian-British computer-animated children's television series created by Elfriede de Rooster and directed by Joeri Christiaen. The series follows the titular character and his fungi friends Lilit and Chep as they go on their misadventures, putting the "fun back into fungi." The program was co-produced with La Cabane and Thuristar in conjunction with Cake Entertainment for distribution.[1][2]

Plot[edit]

The show takes place in a universe where anthropomorphic mushrooms roam the earth while coexisting with other types of life. A Mushler named Mush-Mush and his two best friends, Lilit and Chep, go on "a journey of self-discovery, told through exciting adventure, comedy… and mush mush more!" However, being "pocket-sized guardians of the forest" isn't as easy as it sounds for Mush-Mush, Lilit, and Chep. The trio often gets caught up in various predicaments, but are usually solved with the help of other Mushables or by themselves.[3][4]

Production[edit]

Mush-Mush & the Mushables was created by Belgian artist Elfriede de Rooster, otherwise known as "Brrrumblebee." The Mushables were a collection of sculpted models she did when she experimented with 3D printing, formerly digital painting on ZBrush. The original sculpt of the Mush-Mush figure by Elfriede de Rooster was made on 26 August 2014.[5]

The pilot episode from 2016 originally had just Mush-Mush and Chep fishing, only for them to hear a strange sound. Said sound just so happens to be a choir of Mushlets. The animation was more fluid and used softer colors for the backgrounds and character designs. Chep also has a different voice actor, while Mush-Mush's voice actor remained the same. Bolly's original name was "Ben" and had the letter B on his mushroom cap instead of a snail in the final show.[6][7]

Mush-Mush & the Mushables was greenlit with 48 episodes and two TV specials under 11 or 22 minutes runtime, respectively.[7] The show also had the support of the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (The CNC). The Literary and Graphic Bible were written by Elfriede de Rooster and Benjamin Richard, and the CGI Animation work was outsourced to Cube Creative Studio, owned by French animation company Xilam.[8] The show uses CGI for the Mushable characters, but also has hand-drawn segments in between, which were done with Toon Boom Harmony.[9]

Broadcast[edit]

In the United States, Mush-Mush & the Mushables is commercially distributed by Warner Bros. Television[10] for Cartoonito block on Cartoon Network (and HBO Max)[11] although Cake Entertainment is the main distributor.[12][13] The show itself was produced in Belgium and France, but the scripts were originally penned in a American English and a bit of British English. The cast consists of a blend of American, British, and French-American actors and actresses.[14] Some foreign dubs also keep Mush-Mush's name, while others actually modify the word "Mushable" to fit in with their own orthography.

Awards and nominations[edit]

In 2021, Mush-Mush & the Mushables was nominated for the International Emmy Kids Award[15][16] and the episode "Getting truffy with it" was nominated for the Rockie Awards, organized by the Banff World Media Festival.[17]

The show had a screenings at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with the 22-minute episode, "The Guardian of The Forest"[18] and was selected for the Kecskemét Animation Film Festival in Kecskemét, Hungary. In addition, it was chosen for the Riga International Film Festival 2ANNAS in Latvia with the episode "Morel in the Dark".[19]
