Mush-Mush and the Mushables is a computer-animated comedy/adventure preschool series, created by Elfriede de Rooster and directed by Joeri Christiaen, produced by La Cabane Productions (France) and Thuristar (Belgium), in coproduction with Cake Entertainment (UK).

The Mushables were initially created in 2014 byFlemish artist Elfriede de Rooster who had started developing anthropomorphic mushroom-like characters living in the forest. The project was then developed as an animated series co-written by Elfriede de Rooster and Benjamin Richard, directed by Joeri Christiaen and produced by Perrine Gauthier.

The production of the first season was completed in 2020. The series was launched on August 24th, 2020...[1] and is airing in 150 countries.

The program has won several awards, including a Rockie Award at BANFF[2], and was nominated for an International Emmy Award ®, in the Kids: Animation category[3].

A second season is currently in production[4] and is set to premiere in the Fall 2023[5].

Plot[edit]

Mush-Mush & the Mushables follows the forest adventures of Mush-Mush, his best friends Lilit and Chep and the rest of the Mushable community, as they explore and grow up together. The series tackles various themes such as friendship, personal abilities, self-discovery, community, nature and the circle of life.

Origins[edit]

Mush-Mush was first born as a little 3D figurine, created in 2014 by Elfriede de Rooster, a Belgian artist[6]. After drawing a mushroom character on paper, Elfriede modelled and printed it in 3D. She then created new mushroom characters and developped their world[7].

Producer Perrine Gauthier then discovered Mush-Mush on Elfriede de Rooster’s website and suggested starting the development of an animated series. Since then, the Mushable characters and their world have been developed further and brought to screen[8]

Cast and characters[edit]

Main characters[edit]

Mush-Mush[edit]

Mush-Mush is enthusiastic and always ready to jump into action. He is a natural leader, but far from being perfect. Distracted and impulsive, he gets himself and his friends into tricky situations. With Mush-Mush, things never turn out as planned, but the Mushables never get bored with him.

Mush-Mush has the ability to communicate with nature and to feel its dangers.

Lilit[edit]

Lilit is Mush-Mush’s best friend. She's full of delight and wonder, and finds loveliness in every day. But beyond her dreamy side, she's also a strong character known for her total honesty.

Lilit’s hat has the ability to glow with radiant light.

Chep[edit]

Chep is Mush-Mush’s other best friend. He is driven by an insatiable curiosity about how Mushworld works. He loves facts and figures, information and anecdotes of all sorts. But Chep is also easily stressed out and scared – which is not always easy with Mush-Mush’s taste for adventure.

Chep is also gifted with an impressive memory.

Secondary characters[edit]

The Mushlets[edit]

The Mushlets are younger than our Mushlers heroes. They are not really conscious of being individuals yet, so they behave and move around as a group – like a flock of slightly out of control ducklings.

Sushi-Mushi[edit]

Sushi-Mushi is the village chef. He is an expert at cooking up delicious compost recipes. He has a booming laugh and a big, exhuberant but very warm personality. However, Sushi-Mushi is very picky about good manners and no one wants to get on the wrong side of his.

Chanterelle[edit]

Chanterelle is an artist. She is the creative heart of the community and her pockets are always stuffed full of paintbrushes and crayons. Chanterelle is always ready to organize a celebration or some other peculiar Mushable event. However, she is not very organized and tends to panic randomly.

Mushpot[edit]

Mushpot is the oldest Mushable in Mushton. He has many stories to tell – the autumn hurricane, the great mud slide, the evening beetle stampede... Mushpot embodies everybody’s grandfather figure – a forgetful and sometimes laugh-provoking figure.

Mushpie[edit]

Mushpie is the reassuring and comforting voice of Mushton. She cheerfully looks after the Mushies, the baby Mushables who are quite capable of causing havoc. However, she's still quick to hug them tight in her soft arms whenever she gets a chance. Like an overly attentive aunt, she can sometimes ‘baby’ older Mushables.

Morel[edit]

Morel is patient and trusting. He is also a font of knowledge and anecdotes and Chep loves learning from him. Morel looks after the Mushlets. This is where his patience, kindness – and storytelling talents – are most effective, even if he also spends a lot of time chasing after them.

Bolly[edit]

Bolly is a speedy little Mushler who is always racing about, eager to please. He loves fixing things and doing errands, and volunteers for any job – big or small. He's so fast it's sometimes hard to follow him.

Truff[edit]

Everybody loves Truff. He doesn't take himself seriously and everything is alright in his world. Truff loves nothing better than to lie back in a meadow and look up at the sky, admiring the clouds. He's like a good-natured, easy-going, always smiling big brother.

Fung and Miff[edit]

Fung and Miff are a bit older than Mush-Mush and his friends. They are mischief-makers who find it funny to try and spoil things for any Mushlers smaller and younger than them. They are not mean or bad, but they just like to push boundaries. However, Fung and Miff aren't as clever as they think they are.

Sumush[edit]

Sumush only expresses himself in wallas and is remarkably strong. He is a calm ‘gentle giant’, a reassuring presence to have around. Sumush’s strength often comes in extremely handy.

Puff[edit]

Puff is a shy Mushable who always wants to do things right. He likes things to run smoothly and be settled. He's very emotional and easily gets startled. When that happens, he lets out a puff of smoke out of the top of his hat.

Amanita[edit]

Amanita is a Mushler who tends to put her foot in her mouth. She isn't ill-intentioned but she loves to be right, which isn't always easy with Mush-Mush and his friends.

Starmush[edit]

Starmush is a legendary Mushelder who roams Mushworld alone. Mushables have many stories featuring the brave deeds of Starmush. But the reality is less heroic. Although Starmush does exist and have impressive powers of healing plants, he is not a super-hero figure. He is a grumpy loner who likes his own company and is not keen on being around other Mushables. Depending on his mood, he might help them as well as he might not, or he might try to put them off approaching him again.

Muddler[edit]

Muddler is a mud monster who wants to rid the forest of Mushables. He is lumpy and much taller than Mushables. Because he is made of mud, Muddler avoids sunshine as it dries him out and makes him crackly and stiff. He works in the shadows on achieving his villainous goal...

Muddler does not like Mushables. To him, they keep “ruining” his forest by looking after it. Muddler wants the forest to be a smelly, muddy place, perfect for him alone. To get rid of the Mushables, Muddler uses any means possible, from terrifying them to capturing them in traps. Muddler loves being a villain and coming up with sophisticated plans. He's convinced that he's brilliant at it, no matter how many times Mush-Mush and friends outwit him. That's why, although he can really be threatening, Muddler more of a pantomime villain.
