Musicians' Pension Fund of Canada

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Introduction[edit]

The Musicians’ Pension Fund of Canada (French: Caisse de retraite des musiciens du Canada), is a multi-employer pension plan for musicians in the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) or Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM) working in Canada. The Plan provides Retirement Benefits, Disability Benefits, and Survivor Benefits.

The Plan is funded through contributions by employers. Employee contributions are not required nor are they permitted. Contributions made to the Fund are held in a trust fund for the purpose of providing benefits to eligible Members and their beneficiaries, and to pay for the Fund’s administrative expenses.

History[edit]

The Musicians’ Pension Fund of Canada (MPF Canada) was established April 9, 1962 as a result of collective bargaining between employers and the American Federation of Musicians. The Plan is registered under the Ontario Pension Benefits Act, 1990 and under the Canadian Income Tax Act. The Plan is a multi-jurisdictional plan. As such, the pension legislation of the province in which a Member is employed will apply even though the Plan is registered in Ontario

Organization[edit]

As of December 31, 2017 the Fund had 14,040 members, including 4,560 actives, 3,291 pensioners and beneficiaries to whom benefits are being paid, and 6,189 deferred vested (who are no longer Fund members but who are eligible for a pension benefit from the Fund when they reach the Plan’s retirement age). In 2017, the Fund paid CAD $40 million in benefits. The MPF Canada office is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Fund is administered by a Board of Trustees, consisting of an equal number of employee and employer representatives, who are responsible for the overall operation of the Plan. They serve without compensation. Benefit payments are processed at the Fund Office, which is managed by the Executive Director, who, in turn, is appointed by the Board of Trustees.
