Mustafa Al-Kadhimi
Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is Director of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service. He was appointed to that role in June 2016.[1], working on intelligence activities to support Iraq’s domestic security and to meet foreign policy aims. A skilled mediator, Al-Kadhimi has over 15 years of service in Iraq, with a focus on conflict resolution.
Al-Kadhimi was a vocal opponent to the dictatorship of the Saddam Hussein regime. He lived in exile[2], is not affiliated with any of the Iraqi political parties, and remains independent.
In his role as Director of the Iraq Memory Foundation between 2003 and 2010, an organization that was established to document the crimes of the Baath Party, Al-Kadhimi oversaw a team spread across various countries, including Iraq. He developed the documenting of testimonies and collating footage from victims of the regime of Saddam Hussein[3].
One of Iraq’s most well-known journalists in the Middle East and Europe, he was a columnist and an editor of Iraq Pulse for Al-Monitor, and contributed to various outlets[4].
He has published a number of books and studies, including Masaalat Al-Iraq (The Iraq Question), Inshighalat Islamiya (Islamic Concerns), and Ali Ibn Abi Talib: The Imam and the Man. Most notably, his book Inshighalat Insaniya (Humanitarian Concerns) was selected by the European Union as the best book written by a political refugee in 2000[5]
Fluent in Arabic, English, Swedish, Greek and Farsi, Mr. Al-Kadhimi was born in Baghdad, Iraq.
