Mutaqee Akbar (born August 29, 1979)[1] is an American attorney who is the president of the Tallahassee, Florida branch of the NAACP. Akbar also operates an independent law practice, the Akbar Law Firm.
Early life and education
Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Akbar is the son of Na'im Akbar, a psychologist. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Morehouse College in 2001 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.[2]
Career
From 2004 to 2007, Akbar served as an attorney in the Florida 15th Circuit Court Public Defender's Office. He established his own legal practice in 2008.[3] In 2012, Akbar represented two former Florida A&M University music professors accused of participating in hazing.[4] In 2017, he partnered with Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo to create a series of instructional videos to educate citizens on traffic stops.[5]
