Mutiny of Colours is a 2014 Iranian documentary film co-directed by Zeinab Tabrizy and Paliz Khoshdel about graffiti and street art in the Islamic Republic of Iran.[1]

Synopsis

This documentary film covers the life, artistic style and way of thinking of five Iranian street artists. It is composed of four episodes which include interviews with the artists about the genesis of street art in Iran and the interaction point with the Islamic Iran’s propaganda murals. It also covers the problems and dangers associated with street art in Iran due to graffiti being criminalized to a much greater extent than in western democracies.[2]

FIRST EPISODE: Getting to know CK1, CK1 is one of the most experienced Iranian Street Artists. Peace, anti-war issues and Iranian literature are the most common subjects in his Artworks. Combining the decorated Persian handwriting with poets such as Hafez and Khayyam is common in his Artworks.[3]

SECOND EPISODE: Meeting OMET, Omet uses Farsi font/words in his Artworks to convey his message to the Iranian audience. By integrating childhood themes, nostalgia drawings, and graphic designs, he gained tons of fans, especially when he came up with the idea for T-shirts. He needs to get a license for selling and distributions of his T-shirts from the government, but the governmental sectors are not giving him any license as his works are not Islamic or even acceptable in Islamic culture.[4]

THIRD EPISODE: Traveling to Tabriz – ICY & SOT are two brothers from Tabriz. They are completing their military service. ICY in Tehran and SOT in Tabriz. In Iran, military service is a must; in addition, all boys who need to have a passport and travel overseas have to complete the military service. The majority of these two brothers’ Artwork is about Peace, Kids, Friendship, and Promoting sustainable peace. These two have set up various exhibitions around the world without being present in any of them; two of the displayed works were included in the exhibition along with BANKSY’s Artworks. Persian lines are combined with highly professional stencil works that are popular in the world.[5]

FINAL EPISODE: Introducing the work of a street artist who calls herself “LADY GREEN.” She is going to do a series of portraits of those whose faces have been banned from broadcast on Iranian media for political reasons, due to their ideologies. In this episode, Lady Green compares governmental murals to non-governmental graffiti artworks. She also talks about the evolution of graffiti from the Islamic Revolution of Iran until now and what happens on the walls nowadays, which ideological content is absolutely different, and which one we can call street art and which we can not. At the end of this episode, the municipality is going to clean the whole city of the street artists’ Artworks, those drawn throughout this film.[6]
