MyAlbum is an online photography community founded by Age van der Meer and Jos de Schiffart. The company was founded in 2003 in Joure, the Netherlands as MijnAlbum.nl. The service gained international fame when it launched a new website and mobile apps in 2015. The target group of MyAlbum has since shifted more to hobby and professional 'storytellers'. Members are encouraged to add texts to their online albums in addition to photos and videos.
The purpose behind MyAlbum is on the one hand to offer a place to share albums online in a small circle, and on the other hand to print these albums as photo books.
History[edit]
MijnAlbum.nl is the precursor of MyAlbum. During the rise of digital photography, this site met the need to easily send photos from a to b. In addition, it offered free hosting for photos, so they could be embedded in internet forums and websites. It soon turned out that the business model focused on print was not profitable. In addition to selling advertisements, a subscription model was introduced. Gold account subscribers had more storage space in addition to other additional functionalities.
In the spring of 2014, two of the four founders were (partially) bought out in a management buyout and the company's strategy was completely revised. The proposition aimed at sharing free private photos was no longer unique. The company focused on storytelling and adding context in the form of stories. The mission of the company is therefore to keep memories alive and sparkling, both online and in print.
In May 2015, the site went to Beta and in particular due to good press attention in leading publications such as PetaPixel and TheNextWeb soon acquired a large number of users.
Technique[edit]
In addition to the regular website, both iOS and Android apps have been published for MyAlbum. This iOS app was highlighted several times by Apple in the App Store in various countries.
