MyLOL
MyLOL is the name of a website functioning as an online dating service for teenagers, as well as which operates on a freemium basis[1]. It is marketed as a place for teens (ages 13-19)[1] to forge relationships with other teens, rather than simply connecting with people they already know, thus promoting interaction with strangers, who could lie about their age.[2]
Functionality
MyLOL requires users to input their email address, location, age, and gender[3][1]. It then allows users to sort by location, age, and gender when searching for others[1]. Users are encouraged to add "interests" and photos of themselves to their own profiles[1] and rate each other out of potential categories: “sexy,” “handsome/pretty,” “intriguing,” or “friendly.”[1] Users can leave public comments on each other's profiles, or send private messages.[1]
Potential Dangers
MyLOL and other "teen dating sites"[4] influence adolescents to engage in dangerous behaviors, and expose them to sexual predators[5][2][6][7]. There have been several instances of sexual assault where the perpetrator found the victim through MyLOL.[6][8] It also puts teens at risk for cyberbullying.[1][5][9]
