My Time at Portia is a simulation sandbox RPG developed by chinese developer Pathea Games, and published by Team17, marking the first partnership between Team17 and a Chinese developer.[1] The game was successfully crowd funded on Kickstarter[2], and later launched into early access on the Steam digital distribution platform, on January 23rd, 2018.[3] It is currently still in development and available on windows, as well as being ported to the nintendo switch.[4]

Gameplay[edit]

My Time at Portia is a third-person simulation RPG which takes place in a small town called Portia. In the beginning, the player customizes a personal character that they will control for the remainder of the game. The player can explore, combat creatures, take on assignments to expand their workshop and resources, or spend their time interacting with the various denizens of Portia. The player will level up through various activities and events they take part in, increasing their attributes, as well as skill points to better customize their gameplay.

Workshop and Crafting[edit]

The player takes control of a workshop that will be their base of operations for the rest of the game. They also are given the opportunity to name the workshop, which will be displayed on the workshop itself. Here, they can decorate, sleep to bring the next day, or craft tools and materials for various activities and requirements throughout the game. The workshop is surrounded by a building area that limits the player's placement of objects and construction tables, but can be expanded through purchasing extensions to the yard. The workshop itself along with machines can also be upgraded with various materials. Crafting involves collecting base parts, either through refining raw materials, collection through exploration or purchasing, or crafting them from a worktable. As you upgrade your workshop along with the tables, new recipes will be unlocked.

Decorating your workshop will grant bonuses to your stats, such as increased maximum stamina or HP.

Stamina[edit]

My Time at Portia hosts a stamina system, where each physical activity you perform, such as mining, chopping trees, or attacking consumes stamina. Maximum stamina can be increased through player levels, equipment, skills, and decorating your workshop. When the player reaches 0 stamina, they will not be able to perform any activities that consume stamina, but they may still run around, sprint, and interact with various objects and people. Stamina is restored at the beginning of the day, but can also be replenished through consuming foods, or relaxing in recliners.

Time and Calendar[edit]

My Time at Portia uses a time and day system that determines the activities and events that take place with the player and denizens. Each new day, the game will auto-save, being the only method of saving the game. Each day, the denizens of the town will participate in activities such as wandering, tending to their stores if they are a store owner, or participate in town activities that may be taking place during that day. Holidays and other events will be posted in a mail to the players mailbox and listed on the in-game calendar.

If the player remains awake for too long into the night, the player will collapse and wake up the next day in their workshop, but will not accrue any penalties for doing so. The player may rest in their bed inside their workshop in order to progress to the next day.

Movement and Combat[edit]

Movement in My Time at Portia allows the player to run, sprint, dodge and jump. Sprinting and dodging will cost the player endurance points, which will regenerate automatically rather quickly over time. The player has an inventory containing slots, which may hold various items that they collect through exploration, combat, or crafting, as well as a toolbar on the bottom of the screen. Items range from crafting parts, to consumables, as well as equipment. Objects such as tools, weapons, crafting materials and consumables must be highlighted in your toolbar in order to use them or interact with objects such as machines. To attack a creature, the player must highlight a usable weapon in their toolbar and use it. If the attack collides with a damageable creature, the creature will take damage. The player may freely run around during combat so long as they are not in an attack animation, but may also perform a dodge at the cost of endurance. If the hp of the player reaches 0, it will be Game Over and the player must reload from the last save.

Exploration and Dungeons[edit]

In My Time at Portia, the player may roam in an open-world environment, but are limited by barriers such as rivers. Progressing through the story by completing tasks for the town will open access to new places such as dungeons and new world areas.

The Dungeons in My Time at Portia consist of either a series of rooms and floors of monsters and treasures, or a digging area of destructible terrain to uncover treasures or just collect mining resources.

Relationships[edit]

Interacting with the denizens of Portia, the player can increase their friendship levels by speaking to them, completing tasks for them, or giving them gifts. When enough friendship is obtained for any specific denizen, the player may develop it into a relationship of dating, and even marriage. Not all denizens can be befriended or dated, though same-sex relationships are allowed. In My Time at Portia, denizens may also make an effort to earn the players love, rather than the player doing all the work. It is possible to date more than one denizen at a time, but the player risks being caught, and losing friendship with those involved.

Plot[edit]

Long ago, human technology was at its height. People lived in luxury, robots did most of the work. Ships carried men to the stars. Scientists were able to crystallize energy into power stones, which powered everything. A time today referred to as the "Age of Corruption".

330 years ago, an event called the "Day of Calamity" destroyed civilization. Advanced AI machines used for war become uncontrollable, engulfing the planet with chemical and biological weapons, destroying various continents, sprouting up new mutated lifeforms, and diminishing the human populace. For more than 200 years, the sky was darkened, and what was left of humankind lived underground, struggling to survive - A time known as the "Age of Darkness". During this time, new religions were also formed, such as the "Church of the Light", who predicted that a savior would appear to bring light back into the world. Industry grind to a halt, and much of the knowledge from the age prior were lost or forgotten.

"Ruin Diving" became a practice for machinery in working condition from old structures, by those well enough to brave the dangers, earning the respect of the people. Builders sprung up to make use of the Ruin Diver's findings, and over time, these two professions melded.

Approximately 100 years ago, a man named J. Peach built a machine that tore a hole in the clouds, bringing light back into the world. The machine was lost to history, but used in various places before it ceased functioning. The first opening was called "Day of the Bright Sun", and marked year 0 on the Peach Calendar.

After Peach's achievement, the clouds gradually parted over the next 30 years, bringing most of humanity back to the surface.

On year 98 of the Peach Calendar, the player arrives in the town of Portia, inheriting an old workshop left by the player's father. The player begins a new life as a Builder, restoring the workshop to assist in the town's development, while exploring, ruin diving, and making friends or lovers with the town's people.
