Mykhaylo Usyk
Mykhaylo Usyk is an American bioinformatics scientist who primarily studies the human microbiome.[1]. Usyk began his career by working as a bioinformatics scientist in the lab of Dr. Robert Burk[2] and has since changed his affiliation to pursue a PhD in epidemiology at New York University's school of medicine under the guidance of Dr. Jiyoung Ahn and Dr. Richard B. Hayes[3].
Education
Usyk completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in biomolecular science and bioinformatics at New York University's school of engineering[4]. He obtained his PhD degree from New York University's school of medicine under the guidance of Jiyoung Ahn and Richard B. Hayes[5]
Career
While working at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Usyk gained attention in the field of metagenomics by designing a set of primers to amplify the ITS1 barcode region of fungi and substantially increase the ability to characterize these organisms on a large scale[6]. The design increased amplicon recovery 10-fold over existing methods and was highlighted by the Nature Reviews Microbiology journal as "Setting the bar for mycobiome analysis"[7]. Following his initial success, Usyk was involved with several large projects including one focusing on characterizing the immigrant microbiome using the Hispanic Community Health Study / Study of Latinos cohort [8][9] as well as demonstrating that cervical precancer tumorigenesis is mediated via variation of the cervicovaginal microbiome using the Costa Rica Vaccine Trial cohort [10][11].
After transitioning to working at New York University's medical school Usyk has continued to pursue research in cancer and the microbiome. He has demonstrated that immune toxicity in melanoma is may be prospectively dependent on the presence of specific species of the genus Bacteroides[12].
