Intro[edit]
Myrkott Animation Studio is a Saudi animation studio founded in Riyadh in 2014, which specializes in the creative industry, and animation production. It is located in the heart of the Middle eastern desert, Riyadh - the capital city of Saudi Arabia. A country known for its abundance of oil, strict, conservative religious rules, and strong family oriented traditions. Myrkott produced cartoon series that is very popular on the internet, and social media. It usually addresses social issues, taboos, corruption, and happenings specifically in Saudi Arabia or the region. A comedic take is the key ingredient to all of their productions/episodes that grasps the viewers attention and entertain them.
History:[edit]
Myrkott Animation Studio was officially in late 2014, by 3 key members: Malik Nejer an experienced, and well known cartoonist; Abdulaziz Al Muzaini a talented artist and aspiring animator; Faisal Al Amer a creatively talented and experienced writer. Their very first animation project was a Youtube series called “MASAMEER”. It was the product of their brainstorming sessions where all 3 of them casually joked about creating an animated series that ridiculed the social and local topics within the country.
Masameer was their first IP project that started a few years earlier than the actual studio. It all happened in one of their casual catch up gatherings where they would discuss about recent topics, and happening occurring in their city. They would also reminisce about their childhood days, and how times have changed. It was from there that the name “MASAMEER” was chosen, where it reminded them of a neighbourhood where they grew up as kids.
As Saudi Arabia had strict rules and watchful eyes on local media, there was the issue of which platform to release this new infant project. Away from the scrutiny, and watchful eyes of those under the guise of religious rules and such. The founding members decided to adopt the internet as a platform to release the animation. It was 2011 where they had the first completed episode. Youtube/Internet was a new craze with minimum supervision on contents upload, the perfect platform for them.
Founding Members:[edit]
Malik Nejer:[edit]
Malik Nejer started off as law student, before transition into his hobby full-time. After 2 years of studying law he decided to drop out and pursue his passion, and make a career out of it. Of course, coming from a bedouin traditional family, that move created a tension between him and his father, only to win him back after creating a successful career as a cartoonist, and creative online producer. Malik found inspiration from the socio-cultural around him in Saudi Arabia. Whether it being old childhood memories, tribal difference, governmental/political issues, the middle eastern media etc. This self taught artist paved his way with his drawings and creativity. One of his most popular creation is the online YouTube success “MASAMEER”. Among many other of his creations on Myrkotts youtube channel. It has attracted over 700 million views on social media, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa region.
Abdulaziz Al Muzaini:[edit]
A talented local cartoonist that has collaborated, and is a founding member of Myrkott Studios.
Faisal Al-Amer:[edit]
Faisal Al-Amer is a passionate writer, and storyteller. His career as a teacher was that to sustain himself. He admits that writing has been his calling. Which is why during his free time he spent a few years working as a columnist for several local newspaper. After many years of having a few of his materials rejected, and not having the freedom to express himself as a columnist. It was then that he met Malik Nejer, and decide to collaborate to merge both form of arts together. The result of Faisal's writing/scripts and Malik's cartooning, as well as Adbulaziz's skills brought about the creation of Masameer, Sanbar, Yo’orab, and many more.
