The South Atlantic mussel or patagonic mussel (Mytilus platensis[1]) is a species of filtrator bivalve mollusk from the genus Mytilus of the Family Mytilidae. It lives in the coast of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, from the intertidal up to 60 m depth. It includes populations in Uruguay, all coasts from Argentina, and apparently also in Chilean Patagonia[2].

Taxonomy

This taxon was originally described in 1846 by the French naturalist, malacologist and explorer Alcide d'Orbigny, assigning it to the subspecies Mytilus edulis platensis[3]. Posteriorly, in 2012, this subspecies was elevated to species rank as M. platensis following phylogenetic studies of Chilean mussels[2].

Etimology

Platensis refers to 'from the Plata', the Southwest Atlantic region where it was originally found.
