NAMTA stands for North American Manipur Tribal Association. It is a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit headquartered in Richardson, Texas.[1][2] The organization was founded on May 5, 2023, after the 2023 Manipur violence that began on May 3, 2023, with the aim of helping to perpetuate and preserve the heritage of the hill tribes of Manipur.[3]
NAMTA response to 2023 Manipur ethnic violence
NAMTA had written to the National Commission for Women to report the cases of sexual violence against women in June 2023,[4] weeks before the devastating video showing two Kuki-Zomi women being stripped naked and paraded around by a mob went viral on social media.[5]
NAMTA joined hands with Bay Area Activists to raise awareness of 2023 Manipur violence in the northeastern state of India. The protest was held on July 30 at Fremont, California, in the presence of renowned human rights activists like Pieter Friedrich and Shan Sankaran. The group also wrote letters to President Joe Biden, asking him to raise the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit at the end of June. NAMTA also coordinated efforts with the Indian American Muslim Council, Hindus for Human Rights, as well as Indian Christian Organizations.[6]
Concerned by the state-sponsored violence in Manipur,[7] NAMTA wrote a letter to World Bank president Ajay Banga, urging it to pause funding for the Manipur Infotech Enabled Development Project.[8]
